Prices for rare coins are set during auctions. You have to know what people are willing to bid before you set a price. As this coin has never been on an auction, it's hard to guess. But one can estimate. Other gold coins which only exist in one exemplar has been sold on auctions. It is not unlikely this one would be in that price range. Then we're talking about $10 000 000. Probably more as it was a few years since last time and because we tend to see new records each time something unique comes for sale.

Only one, yes. It's a US coin, no other country can make them. If they do, it's called forgeries. And forgeries are not valuable.

10M$ for the little coin?

is it like art that the value is higher and higher the older it is?

Yep, that's the current record.

No, it's not like that either for coins or for art. The most valuable art is Da Vinci, Van Gogh and a few others, they're not the oldest artists we know of. And a coin from 1849 is certainly not one of the oldest. I have a lot of coins that's older. My oldest is from 1066-1095, at least 750 years older, and it's only worth a tiny fraction of the $10M. What really drives price for coins is scarcity. If there's only one known, it will be enormously expensive. If there's 100, it will be expensive still, but not outlandish. If there's 1 000 000 of them, it will be cheap. Unless it's gold. Gold is never cheap since you can always get the metal value.

Prices often go up, yes, but they can go down also. I'd advise you to take the $10M. Having it means investing in security as well. Can't leave something like that lying around the house....

Anything can go down in value. It's value depends opon what collectors are willing to give for it. If collectors lose interest or go bankrupt then prices will fall. High-end prices are particularly sensitive as it's generally only a few bidders in that prize range.

You can estimate how many coin collectors there are around the world?

I can't. Some dealers could, perhaps. But I know that the number of collectors willing to fork out millions of dollars on a single coin is not large.
