Default Federer's Strokes

I am continually amazed by Rogers strokes and speed.
Can we discuss how he is dominating when there clearly are better/harder forehands.
Better bachands, better/harder serves, and most def better volleyers.
Faster players?
I am just at a loss...
Is it just an all around sound game being played with supreme confidence or what?

Hi Yonex.

Did they have a Roger Federer forum when you signed up? Maybe he is unaware that Rogi has his own forum Ducky.

If so this does belong there.

But, to comment on his strokes further..

His backhand is exceptional. I saw many shots against Andre that 90% of the tour couldn't make. Like one where Agassi pulled him out wide, but Federer moves so gracefully and naturally that he got there in plenty of time - Made a tremendous topspin backhander from behind the doubles alley, over the high part of the net, and inside the line for a winner.... Many would have hit the net, went for the safe shot towards the middle, or hit the ball out. Not Terminator RODGE!

I'd say Roddick, Johansson, Dent, Tomas Johansson as well as many more have faster serves, but Fed's genius is the spin and placement that separates himself from the pack.

There are faster players, but Roger moves side to side well and controls his body angle to rip off a better shot.

Please keep the feedback coming! This is the story of one of the best ATP players of all time! Everyone should come in and take part in what makes this monster GAME so great!!

Fed Ex!!!! Shippin serves, volleys via FEDERAL EXPRESS through AIR MAIL and into play!!!

There might be a select few who hit their forehands harder than Federer, but better? I dont think so.

Yes, there are a few who hit the forehand harder but they are not better forehands. There are better backhands i.e. more consistent backhands, but Federer's is pretty versatile with the good slice and good power when he is on. His serve is not the hardes but is one of the best. He may not be the best volleyer but he does show great skill at times. He volley extremely well in during Wimby 2003 and has serve and volleyed less and less afterwards. He may not be the fastest player based on pure speed, but he gets to the ball as well as anyone and is always perfectly positioned because he anticipates where the ball is going so well. While many players would have to play a purely weak defensive shot, Federer's anticpation allows him to hit a neutral or even offensive shot at times from parts of the court that are thought to be of a disadvantage. So, to answer your question, he dominates because he is so good in so many areas. Who else can say that they are at or near the top in all of these categories?

Too bad if the thread gets moved, it's meant for fans/non fans alike to comment on.

His movement is probably the best out there.

And his forehand is the one most people like to say it's the best.

I don't really think there are faster players than Roger these days. It seems like he is at, or at least approaching, Coria/Hewitt footspeed. And this explains a lot of his great shots --- the fact that he was able to get there, and be in position to make them.

Those flick backhands returns dont seem to get punished either, they have tons of spin but rarely depth, the only player who seems to be able to smack em seems to be Marat, but i'll be damned if he isn't the most perplexingly mercurial player around.
I have to admit though, its good to see the slice backhand given such prominence again.
Modern "classic" tennis !
Gotta love it!

Federer's anticipation is uncanny; probably better than either Hewitt's or Coria's.

Definitely, MisterQ.

That's one of the most important and sometimes underrated qualities in tennis.

Hey buddy! It's not a problem! The moderators will move the brilliant thread to Roger's forum and we get to keep the break-downs of his game inside! It's pure chemistry just like the son of chemists himself!

Then, we good posters can continue to examine every facet of his amazing game with no people like RDucky to butt in the way!!

Keep posting more, Yonex! Expand on this master of the courts!
