L'année des bobos

Après une année 2001 des plus fastes, la saison 2002 du tennis français aura été celle des occasions manquées et des blessures. Même si la place de finaliste de Coupe Davis a pu faire croire à une embellie, les leaders sont presque tous en retrait de leur niveau d'il y a deux ans.

Le constat est simple: régression. Il suffit de regarder le classement comparé de l'ATP Race 2001 et 2002 pour s'en convaincre, les leaders historiques du tennis français ont tous levé le pied cette saison. A commencer par le numéro un tricolore, Sébastien Grosjean qui a chuté de la 6e à la 17e place, ce qui est tout de même mieux que son ami Arnaud Clément qui perd 21 places de la 17e à la 38e. Fabrice Santoro glisse de la 22e à la 35e, Nicolas Escudé de la 27e à la 34e, et Cédric Pioline de la 84e à la 119e. N'en jetez plus la coupe est pleine. Ces chutes vertigineuses sont à peine compensé par le bond de 114 places de Paul-Henri Mathieu qui se retrouve 36e et par les résurrections d'Arnaud Di Pasquale et Olivier Mutis qui refont leur apparition dans le Top 100.

La cuisse de Grojean

2001 avait été la saison de tous les bonheurs pour Sébastien Grosjean avec la victoire en Coupe Davis en Australie, mais aussi le triomphe dans le tournoi de Bercy et la place de finaliste aux Masters à Sydney. Sans réelle coupure, il connut un début de saison moyen avant de se blesser à la cuisse en 1/4 finale de Coupe Davis face à la République Tchèque à Pau. Traînant la patte, il enchaîna deux 1/4 finale à Monte Carlo et Roland-Garros. Renonçant à Wimbledon, sa fin de saison fut marquée par quelques coups d'éclats en Coupe Davis et une victoire, sa seule de la saison, dans le tournoi de Saint-Pétersbourg.

Les abdos d'Escudé

Tout avait bien commencé en 2002 pour Nicolas Escudé avec un match dantesque face à Sampras en 1/16e finale de l'Open d'Australie et une victoire dans le tournoi de Rotterdam. Comme Grosjean, il se blesse à Pau face à la République Tchèque, mais dans son cas c'est au genou. Biceps, pouce, et surtout déchirure abdominale émaillèrent la suite de sa saison et son retour prématuré à Wimbledon le mit K-O pour le compte. Ce fut finalement à Bercy en fin d'année qu'il retrouva son niveau et se hissa en 1/4 finale où il perdit face à Safin.

Le poignet de Clément

Arnaud Clément, quant à lui, a connu un début de saison médiocre avant de livrer un match d'anthologie face à Corretja au 3e tour de Roland-Garros, qu'il ne perdit que 8-6 au 5e set. Une finale à 's-Hertogenbsch et deux huitièmes de finale à Wimbledon et à l'US Open, voilà le bilan d'une année pourrie par cette blessure au poignet qui l'a même contraint à céder sa place à Mathieu en finale de la Coupe Davis. Bilan très mitigé aussi pour Fabrice Santoro qui fut handicapé de longs mois par une blessure à la cheville et au tibia gauche, mais qui aura réussi à s'imposer dans le tournoi de Dubaï en février.

L'avènement de Mathieu

La grosse satisfaction française de la saison est venue de Paul-Henri Mathieu. Si on se souvient surtout de sa défaite face à Youzhny dans le 5e match décisif de la finale de la Coupe Davis, on n'oublie pas que juste avant, il avait remporté deux tournois coup sur coup à Moscou et à Lyon. Derrière lui, la jeunesse triomphante de Richard Gasquet a aussi marqué les esprits. Le champion du monde juniors s'est qualifié pour le tableau final de Monte-Carlo avant d'avoir fêté ses 16 ans, et y a passé un tour. Victorieux de Roland-Garros et de l'US Open juniors, il a fait un bond de 1220 places à l'ATP pour finir l'année à la 164e place. Son potentiel est énorme et les prochaines années pourraient être "l'ère Gasquet

I couldn't believe what I read in Tennis Magazine today. They say that Romania couldn't afford a new court so they had a deal with the french federation. The french could choose the surface but they had to build the court and leave it to the romanian federation. That is why they will play on carpet and not on clay.

Btw Vale, you have to contact Tennis Magazine through the Internet to receive it cause the "coupon" only works in french speaking countries. If you want, you can tell me what you want to write and I'll translate it . Their address is tmag@tennismagazine.com .
