aces are not so important it's important he holds his service game with or without aces

I think he would have been wise to go for less on most of the first serves, because he was having to play off of second serves on most of the points!

However, he did seem to know that Gaudio wouldn't attack the second serve too aggressively, so Andre was comfortable bending them in with lots of margin for error (almost like he used to in the old days), so there weren't many double faults.

did you see,

how strong mentaly Andre is?!
his nerves are from iron i think...

but i like to see again 12 aces (or more, remember 17 was against Roddick?)
against federer.
Otherwise it will be difficult again..

federer doing always 14- or more against Andre, sampras also won his matches due to his aces every time..

not many backhand winners down the line from either player (this surprised me, because i expected tons of them from Gaudio). But the crosscourt backhand rallies were very fast paced, and it would have been dangerous to change direction too much. i guess it paid off...

Andre's mobility was impressive in this match.

He made some great shots, but also a few poor ones. Gaudio's defense was good, so points often went on quite a while. Andre was mentally tough when it counted, but I would have preferred that he convert more break points, and hold serve more securely!

Agassi battles into quarter-final

Latest results

Andre Agassi survived a gruelling first set to beat French Open champion Gaston Gaudio and progress to the last-eight of the Nasdaq-100 Open on Tuesday.
Gaudio faded after taking just one of 10 break points in an 85-minute opening set and Agassi, seeded ninth, came through to win 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.
