Default Rogers Cup Q F: (7) Matosevic def (14) Sock 2-6 6-4 6-3

Good recovery after a very very slow start, and very good showing considering how bad he was physically two days ago. Doubt he'll do much damage in MD in this shape, but good job on getting there

NID.

This drawer of socks is more dangerous on the tennis court than Jack.

Shame for American tennis that prospects like Sock and Kudla can't make it through qualifying. I say that as a Brit, rather than a patriotic American. It's simply good for the game if there's a strong presence in the world's biggest marketplace.

At the same time it's nice to see Matosevic continue his form from the past week, he had been on a pretty woeful run.

Sock again drifting away after a strong initial showing. He has to learn to stay the course of a match.

This year's been a rough transition for him, but with the right work ethic I'm sure he'll continue to improve.

I'm glad that tennis is one of those sports where any kid almost anywhere in the world can get his hands on a half decent racquet, and develop his skills before getting sponsored. The only parties I see benefiting from a larger tennis presence in the US are corporations. I'd like to hear how you feel it's good for the game though.

Second, the more of these top 100 players we see from the US, the worse the coverage gets. In Canada, we rely on american networks for coverage, and they are heavily biased in showing matches with american players, no matter how insignificant they are, and ignore more important matches with higher ranked players.

Mato is hot right now, taking out Blake, Davy and Milos last week before falling to an even hotter Tursunov.

I remember during the 2011 USO, I had to watch Delpo on a crappy stream cause some scrub from the US was playing at the same time.

Not sure what networks you've been watching, cause Sportsnet and TSN are Canadian networks, and have fairly good coverage, unless you don't get them.

Tennis may be a sport that anyone can pick up a racquet and play, but that's often provided that their parents can pay for a club membership for them and equipment. If you're talking about a working class family that's simply outside their reach. Those living on the breadline or in relative poverty, as many in developed nations currently are, don't have disposable income to invest in their child's sporting activities. Tennis is very much an upper class sport at present with a lack of opportunities for those whose parents don't have the riches to support them. Compare it to a sport like soccer that children around the world play on the street or on any open space with a few jumpers for goalposts and it's not hard to see that tennis is less accessible.

If the sport is to grow then it needs to maintain a high profile commercially. For instance, multi-national sportswear companies are much more likely to invest in programmes to support tennis growth through sponsorships if there is a growing audience and a bright commercial outlook. If there's a dearth of American talent then it will have an effect on the audience in the US, the world's largest marketplace. As that audience shrinks so will the money pumped into tennis programmes. It's not in the interests of brands to invest in a sport that isn't capturing the public's imagination. Moreover, government programmes are often boosted by success. You may think they'd be more active in helping to fund the sport in times of little progress but that often doesn't seem to be the case. In the UK it's taken Murray's victory for the Scottish government to pledge to invest heavily in tennis, aiming to increase access and breed a future generation of talent.

Television coverage is based upon the market and it should tell you that current US focus demonstrates how important to broadcasters US talent is. If US talent continues to fall away then so will broadcasters, you'll have an even greater problem if some decide that there are other sports they can show that will garner greater audiences.
