OP asks for history of the sport and people are talking about guys like Raonic and Haase...

Honestly, several of the all-time greats.

Federer rarely ever drops his composure. Edberg, a personal favorite of mine, was all class. Sampras could get pretty darn emotional on his day, but he always found a way to repress it better than some of his rivals. Borg didn't earn the nickname "ice cold" for nothing. And I'd argue that Lendl's stoicism reflected a certain calm as well.

Federer used to lose his cool quite a bit before 2006.

Borg. Sampras didn't lose it very often either.

I think it is very unusual for a player to never lose their cool.

In 2003/2004 he was quite clam from what I can remember while in 2005 he was a bit more open about his emotions on court I felt, but he went back to being pretty quiet even on court in 2006. I think the slight disappointment he felt at the end of his 05 season caused a bit of that.

In all seriousness, all of the all time great players are always the calmest.

Laver, Rosewall, Borg, Sampras, Federer, Edberg, Lendl, all very calm players.

But that doesn't mean you can't be fiery and be an all time great.

Gonzales, Connors, McEnroe, Agassi, Hewitt, Safin, Nadal, Roddick, all very fiery competitors who made the top of the game.

delpo

dull could've been a contender if he stopped doing his ugly fistpumps and kicks whenever he wins a point, he does rarely show anger unlike 99% of players

Lendl wasn't a calm player at all. He argued with line calls just as much as Connors and McEnroe, and was once suspended for exceeding the fine limit.

I have seen the 1985 Canadian Open final between McEnroe and Lendl. It was pretty hilarious how they both took it in turns to berate the umpire and officials, and even sympathized with each other despite hating each other .

I'm not sure where this myth of Lendl being a calm, emotionless robot has come from.

I love that people are cherry-picking to try and undermine Fed's place in this thread. Most players have moments in their career where they've looked a little more human.

We can do the same with Sampras just as well.

One of the most outstanding examples in my mind is his exit from the '02 French Open to a lowly-ranked Italian player (can't remember his name; Gonz-something?) During his miserable defeat, he threw a tantrum that included smashing his racquet, smacking a ball into the stands, and kicking the net.

Hell, one of my earliest exposures to him--though I don't remember it so well--was his outrage in the '98 Cinci against Rafter (I think?). He reamed the ump and dropped F bombs galore because of a bad call or something.

I'm sure there were other examples from earlier in his career too. Obviously, there's the infamous emotional display in '95 against Courier, not that anyone would hold it against him.

I doubt any player is spotless after a career on tour. It's worse these days because modern media is much more likely to and keen on capturing such outbursts.
