The great point with Gilbert might have been the "winning ugly" stuff. I don't like when Guille is too nice and exchange high fives with the opponent!
Do you mean the article in La Nacion, psicho? I just had a look at it (it's once again from that Bernardi, the guy spends his life spying on Coria and publishing all his great insider informations in LaNacion!)
He says that if they decide to work together, Higueras would be ready to be his full-time coach until Wimbledon, except during Munich and Rom, is Guille also playing in Munich??

no way it could be gilbert. gilbert mocks guille for being 'little' during telecasts and guille would mock brad for his brain that is so little! gilbert can only work with 'big dumb guys' like roddick who use force to win because he doesnt know about subtlety and craft. FORGET BRAD GILBERT! ...except to run a truck over. he is poo-poo.

I was just joking with Gilbert and his "winning ugly" strategy, daze, I can't stand Gilbert!

Wow, we can feel the love in your post, star!
It makes sense to me, at this state of his career, to focus on clay in order to rebuild his game and I'm glad he wants to work with a claycourt specialist, actually.
As for the fact that Higueras doesn't travel, the article in La Nacion sounds slightly different, at least for the clay season. But daze is right, Perlas said anyway that Guille asked him to be there only for the big events. He must have a sort of "Tony Roche" ideal in his mind. I'm not sure either it will work for him, but if he doesn't try, he'll never know!

That made me laugh when you write that Higueras is old school. Poor José, he always was a bit old school, even as an active player! You're right about that. But at least he has a lot of coaching experience. My personal "nightmare" was that Guille continues to work with one of his recently retired "buddies" à la Rodriguez or Moyano!
I think Guille wasn't in a great position to seek for a new coach with his recent results, I'm relieved he gets a chance to work with somebody like Higueras in those conditions. That's why I hope they will at least give it a try for the European clay season!

Oh, and our favorite informant also writes in La Nacion that it's not sure yet if Guille will play in Miami.
I think he should skip it anyway, what's the point in practicing on hardcourt for one tournament?

its interesting, but i'm not so sure, truc...you have to get into the mind of a coach. for them, here is the real opportunity: someone who NEEDS their guidance right now. THIS is a good kind of challenge. plus if they succeed, they will be seen as heroes...yet we all know, guille can make someone look very good because he is likely to get so good. so he's a very good risk, actually.

also, there are some who might say guille 'seems weak' because of these issues but they are wrong. he is having the troubles because he is STRONG, not weak. he is more complicated and has more sophisticated machinery...like a very good car. so he can break down if something goes wrong, but when you get it all right, he excels far beyond the 'low maintenance' performance vehicles. guillermo is a maserati.

It's interesting how Guille played some of his best tennis, or at least had some of his best results playing without Perlas - notable Umag, the China Open, and Kooyong. Of course the Rome final stands out IMO as Guille's best performance all year, and perhaps ever (?), but then the relationship with Perlas seemed a lot healthier at that time than later in the year.

I wonder if Guille tried too hard to live up to Perlas's expectations, so that Perlas's presence made him more tense and anxious. Without Perlas watching, maybe Guille found it easier to relax and bring out the creative side of his play. Maybe with less reminders of all the things they worked on in practice, Guillde didn't have to try so hard to execute all the many changes they were undertaking.

If that is the case, then a coach who works him hard in training, but isn't an overbearing presence at tournaments may be just the right thing. There is only one way to know for certain. I'm hoping it all works out great for Guille. He definitely has the will, and I believe he will find the way!

VAMOS!!!

An interview of Guille in Clarin today (before he left to IW):
http://www.clarin.com/diario/2006/03...es/d-07001.htm

He says he won't play in Miami. His next tournament will be Monte Carlo (if his elbow is fine, he has an elbow tendonitis).

The rest isn't new. He speaks about how he feels when he's playing like that, that he is ashamed, etc. It's pretty self-critical.
He's playing better in practice (in another article about him, the journalist also says that he can serve well in training: "Días atrás Coria asombraba a su colaborador, Diego Moyano, sacando con precisión admirable. Como para suponer que sus dificultades exceden lo técnico.").
People don't always realize how tough it is mentally to stay 3 years in the top ten, he makes the comparison with what happened to Hewitt and Ferrero. But at the age of 24, he is stronger than ever and will continue to play.
He feels at peace outside of the tennis court, better than when he was younger. He's also thankful for all the support he gets from a lot of people (Vilas, Clerc, Maradona, etc.).

thats funny, yesterday i looked over the schedule, and i shot past miami, and finally stopped on monte carlo, april 17. i thought, ok, lets see how its all feeling then. i think it may be too early still, but that at least seems the next logical benchmark to make another assessment. so we'll see...they sure do seem to interview him EVERY DAY in this paper...i think the point is to leave him alone just a little.

Repost from forocoria site re: radio interview with Salatino who spoke to Guille in California. Some interesting quotes here I think, esp. the "jode" part I believe (?), but perhaps someone can translate this & enlighten us? Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help with that! VAMOS!!!

[I'd post the link, but sorry, like happened to Truc earlier, when I posted it, the link wouldn't appear]

Miguel"
