Again you go on about appearance fees, as if Challengers have tons of money to dispense, when it would make perfect sense for Donskoy to play Challengers. His ranking is slipping and he has been struggling to win matches. It's very common for players in that kind of situation to play a Challenger in the hopes of boosting their confidence. It helps that Vancouver is a big event, on the right surface leading up to the US Open, and on the same continent.

Donskoy certainly can't afford to tank. And he certainly wouldn't be a "big star" to the Canadian public (or the USTA, as this is an American Challenger), regardless of the Russian being the top seed.

Amir

Pretty bad loss for Reid, but glad to see Diez take it.

Unfortunate draw for Bester.

Do you really think Donskoy would normally lose to Evans, I think not, Donskoy might not have gotten one, I still think maybe he did, he is big cause he's a top 100 player, who don't normally play CH's, but certainly they were going to give one to Kubot as he was a WC and Wimby QF, Pospisil might have one too.

You would be surprised what some CH's can do, some have good money.

I watched the Davis Cup match between the two in which Evans absolutely killed the Russian from the baseline, so, yes, I gave Evans a good chance here. The question was more whether Dan's head would be in it, because the match-up (and Donskoy's form) favored him.

Losing in three sets is also not an obvious tank.

I am sure sometimes appearance fees happen, e.g. in tournaments like Prostejov. But then the money goes to big names (i.e. not Donskoy) and those players receive WCs. I highly doubt that the USTA promised Donskoy appearance money many weeks ago when the entry list came out; they would have held on to their money in the hope of luring a real star.

Even in this field it would make more sense to give appearance money to players like Rochus and Becker, who achieved much more in their careers than Donskoy.

Just look at the Russian's results. He needed to be here. I didn't watch the match, but I would be very surprised if Donskoy just threw it.

On his day, and when his head is in the right place, Evans is capable of producing some absolutely sublime tennis. The guy really does have the talent to be top 100. Whether he has the dedication is another thing and his performance last week in Lexington was a joke. This kind of result is never a surprise.

I saw most of the Donskoy-Evans match, hard to tell if Donskoy was trying his hardest, I think Evans got away with one here, didn't think he would win, he did outplay him maybe at the end though, was taking more chances and got more lucky, with the higher risk play and the errors he was making I thought he would lose, I personally don't think Evans has what it takes to crack the top 100, his serve needs a lot of work for a start.

This event rarely has top 100 players attend it, so maybe it needs to pay a fee to land them.

Yeah, the DC win might have had something to do with this.

Donskoy has hardly strung 2 wins together all year . Going out the top 100 before you know it and deservedly so !

The USTA would not give Davydenko appearance money for this event, let alone Donskoy. Let's be real.
