Would be deserved since he would have a MS title, one GS F and three SF in that scenario

This will probably be his only chance to sneak into #2, for however briefly. Kind of like how Rafter took his last chance to be #1 before Agassi built a huge point lead in 1999. It's a shame he got such bad QF draws at Madrid and Rome as he would've been a better chance then.

Also was a shame he had to skip Monte Carlo due to injury since he didn't have any points to defend.

please Time Violation, 'use your chances' he had ONE hard opponent in the whole run to a GS final. not his fault but nonetheless very lucky

the fact is that Ferrer potentially getting to #2 ranking would be entirely lucky. there are a number of variables that would help him, as I've already mentioned, but just using our brains I think we understand that having one big title in the last calendar year makes it quite strange that he might possibly get to #2
the reality is that when a player really has earned or deserves a spot, they hold onto it for a bit. Ferrer would not hold onto it long at all because it is indeed a fluke due to some fortunate variables

the odds that Ferrer would have the fortunate Roland Garros draw he had and also end up with this sort of draw at Wimbledon are, what, under 10%? of course luck is playing a big part in this possibly happening

considering what the other top guys also have it would not really be deserved in my opinion.... Murray a masters title THIS season, final at AO, potentially SF here. Nadal GS champion this year, multiple Masters 1000s this season, Djokovic GS champion this year, masters 1000 title.
haha let's just be honest, Ferrer getting the #2 rank would be incredibly lucky

Nadal I can understand given he played no match for half a year.
this is the reality. Ferrer may be incredibly consistant but it is just sad that he might get #2 ranking when in 2013 he has not won any big titles because he cannot beat the biggest guy in the sport. a few wins against decent top 10 opponents does not really make him worthy
I love David as a player but even he probably would not consider himself the second best player on tour just because he somehow gets in the position

Remember this scenario has Murray in the final as well.

So Murray would have 3/3 GS finals.

This would basically be based solely off the points Ferrer got for getting to the RG final whilst Murray was hurt.

How many should he had? 7? Many times the rest of the top 4 arrive into a GS final by having one hard opponent as well, usually in the semis. How many hard opponents did Nadal have before the final in USO 2010? Or Nole in Wimbledon 2011? The point is, Tsonga was the favorite and someone who was supposed to finally arrive into the finals, playing at home etc. If Ferrer lost, nobody would've called it an upset. Anyway, the numbers don't lie, that's why we have computer rankings

The only man who is to blame that players like Ferrer and Murray can smell 2nd place is nobody else but - Nadal.

We should all be thankful for Kneedal's inability to play more balanced tennis continuously, like all others do. But as we all know, he would be unable to face Nole in that case, no?
It's not like Murray's "continuity" is much better, but still better than Rafito's long vacations...

Am I missing something here?

...
If we retire these points, we get :
1. DJOKOVIC : 10.840 pts
2. FERRER : 6.860 pts
3. NADAL : 6.850 pts
4. MURRAY : 6.610 pts
5. FEDERER : 5.290 pts

Ferrer reaching SF would mean 6860 + 720 points = 7580
Murray reaching F would mean 6610 + 1200 points = 7810

So Murray would be #2

I wouldn't complain. He wouldn't be there for very long, but it'd be nice to see David with a career high of #2. He deserves it.
