All top four seeds should qualify with relative ease. I don't think Vatutin stands a chance.

Quite some players in that doubles draw that I've never seen before, so I'll be looking forward to that.

The weather forecast is pretty good, so my plan is to go most days

Vesely withdrew, so Carballes Baena is the LL. Very good for Robert, who often has unfortunate draws but could go deep into the tournament now

I went today and might write down some impressions later

Default Re: Week 28: Scheveningen (Entry List)

Some of my impressions from yesterday:

Giustino [Q] d Phau [6] 6-3 6-4

Giustino was 3-0 up and then Phau came back, and it seemed like he would just steamroll from there. Phau pushed the qualifier back with some hard and heavy topspin shots. Giustino also has absolutely terrible on-court attitude; he was shouting at himself even while he was winning. So I thought he would just collapse. But then Phau started producing a lot of UEs from the baseline. Giustino also took more control of the baseline rallies. I still felt like Phau was the better player, but instead of finishing off rallies he sprayed UEs (missing by quite a lot). Phau also complained to the umpire after the first set that some supporters were applauding his UEs, which I don't think was true. Gojowczyk, Greul and Meffert came to watch parts of this match.

Ebelthite [Q] d Westerhof 7-5 6-4

Only saw the end of the first set, which showed the expected style of play: Westerhof dominant from the rallies, but Ebelthite relying on his serve and trying to keep the rallies short. Westerhof had two SPs at 5-4 on the Australian's serve and really choked, producing two very similar return errors (one of which was on a weak second serve). He just collapsed from thereon out and lost the first set. Either Giustino or Ebelthite will now reach the QF!

Ghem d Juska [Q] 6-4 6-4

Absolutely dreadful match. The look on Ghem's face at the end of the match summarized it very well. Juska was fighting for every point, but luck wasn't on his side today. He was 'attacked' by the court, sustaining a hand injury in the first set and making a nasty tumble, ending on both knees at one point in the second set (He said something like "the court already tried to break my fingers once and my knees as well"). He needed the physio for the finger issue, who treated him with a needle. Juska wasn't impressed with that and shrieked in pain But he was laughing about it quite loudly, looking around for people to share in his laughter. Ghem and the umpire remained stoic though, to Juska's visible disappointment The same thing happened when he fell on his knees, when the tournament referee asked him if he needed the physio and he said "no needle!"

Meffert d Nedovyesov [4] 7-6 (4) 4-6 7-5

By far the best match of the day, with very little separating the two. Full of long, drawn-out, but good baseline rallies. Meffert sometimes mixed it up with net play, especially in the final set; Nedovyesov preferred to play some drop shots for variety's sake. Meffert always plays in Scheveningen and never does particularly well, but always strikes me as the kind of player you do not want to draw in the first round, because he is guaranteed to make your life difficult. Today it was clear that Nedovyesov has more talent, but that Meffert's solidity was the key to succes. The Ukrainian refused to shake the umpire's hand because of an incident in the first set. Meffert had a break point, when he hit a return very deep that Nedovyesov couldn't return. The return was called out by the linesman, but then overruled by the umpire, who subsequently handed the point (and therefore the break) to Meffert. Nedovyesov a) believed that the ball was in fact out (it was very close) and b) that it should be a let. I'm inclined to disagree with him, but it was not great timing for such a call to be made. Nedovyesov demanded to see Ed Hardisty, but the tournament referee said it was up to the umpire's discretion and interpretation.

Frantzen/Schoorel [WC] d Haase/Fransen [1] 6-3 6-1

This match reaffirmed my belief that Haase is one of the Top 100's worst doubles players, the fluke run at the AO notwithstanding. Frantzen was a class above everyone else on court. Based on this match, I really believe that he should try to become a doubles specialist. The WC-team should definitely be making the final with the draw they have now.

Van der Duim/Westerhof d Ghem/Groen 7-6 (1) 6-4

Only saw the end of the first set, but I was surprised that the all-Dutch team let it get to a tie-break. Sander Groen was absolutely abysmal. Slow reactions, not a lot of power and some very bad UEs (that had Westerhof almost giggling). VDD/Westerhof didn't look very good either, but it was enough to win. Ghem didn't really seem particularly interested in winning.

Totally desiccated after one day in the sun, so decided not to go today even though the OOP is more interesting than yesterday.
