Carsten has lost his 2nd round clash with Victor Troicki 6-4 6-3 6-3, he got one less game then what Robredo got in the first round. He was very poor on break point conversions he has about 10 or more for the match and didn't convert any, in one game Ball was up 0-40 recieving and Troicki hit three straight second serves under 140km but he still couldn't convert really it couldn't get any easier then that.
You simply cannot win matches with poor BP conversions like that. Very similar to his match against Berdych in Dusseldorf last week where he converted 1/10. Still good that he got atleast one win on clay, I can't wait to see how he goes on grass. Also good luck in the doubles - Knowles/Fish will be tough.
Carsten has a pretty good draw this week at the Nottingham challenger and shouldn't have too much trouble at least making it to the quarters. The problem is unless there are quite a few withdrawls from Queens then Carsten would have to play qualifying there for next week. This is a dilemma because he could potentially be playing his semifinal or final match at Nottingham at the same time.
Perhaps he could do a Tsonga from a couple of years ago and request his matches to be a little bit later in the day and travel to Queens qualies after his match at Nottingham. Either way I think Carsten will do well this week and in fact the entire grass season as well. He is the third alternate on the Newport list as well so he should get to play a couple of ATP tournaments in the next few weeks.
Unfortunately with the venue switch to Nottingham I don't think it would be possible for him to do what Tsonga did a few years ago. Google says it takes 3 hours by car from Nottingham to London whereas Surbiton was located in London.
I'm interested to see how Ball goes on grass. His junior results on it weren't impressive but it is pretty hard to get a good read off only a handful of results (especially with an erratic player like Carsten). His kick serve is likely to be nullified to some effect on the grass although the rest of his game should be ok and his serve will still be a major weapon.
