For the tournament in Amersfoort I've given an extra Wild Card (6th) to a new player. Since we didn't have that many players to start with (13) I thought this might be a good idea, just to bring someone new in to the game and give the field a bit more depth.

I was also thinking we could maybe reserve two extra Wild Cards per tournament for new players. New players usually don't know the commitment rules and therefore often have to apply for a Wild Card, so maybe it's better to offer them extra Wild Card spots.

@robus: in respons to your post in the PAW Amersfoort thread: isn't the deadline 24 hours before play starts? I made the commitments Sunday morning around 11 and buffel hadn't posted the WC request at that time. That's why I gave him the WC.

Ok, so how does this go with each other?

If you haven't posted a commitment until midnight (local time) on July 16, you can ask for a wildcard

lol, you're right.

I just copied that from my previous tournament (January this year) and I didn't know the exact rules anymore.

edit: still, he didn't post a commitment in the commitments thread, so technically I was right to give him a WC

I use the deadline as midnight local time on the day before the start of main draw, IE January 29th for next week.
I saw that other use 24 hours before the start of main draw, which IMO is a problematic deadline because the order of play is normally not available 24 hours in advance, so players who want to commit on the day before the start of the main draw don't know whether the deadline is allready passed...
I think we should determine a general rule on this matter and instruct all managers to use the same deadline.
IMO The deadline should be a fixed date and time (whatever date and time we agree on) and not ambiguos time expression...

... Also, it seems there is some confusion on the number of wild cards, and when should wild cards be accepted...
This is related to the commitment deadlines of course...
The policy I am using is that WC are given to players who failed to make a commitment until the deadline or wish to change their tournament after that...
I agree, especially with this:

IMO in this case, players who asked for wc while the commitment list was still open should be treated as if they have already commited on time.
Like nitsansh said, we should determine a general rule on this matter and instruct all managers to use the same deadline.

Player's B PAW scoring pts: = SQRT (100*A / B) or 10*SQRT(A)/SQRT(B)
(SQRT=square root)

EXAMPLE:

Indian Wells 2004 R1:

A.Medina-Garrigues vs D.Randriantefy

Medina Garrigues' rank pts: 489.25
Randriantefy's rank pts: 365.25

Medina Garrigues PAW Scoring pts = SQRT (100*365.25/489.25) = 8.64 = 9
Randriantefy PAW Scoring pts = SQRT (100*489.25 / 365.25) = 11.57 = 12

Hence, A.Medina-Garrigues vs D.Randriantefy..........(9-12)

Note:

1. The ranking list to be used for PAW scoring points is the ranking at the time of the draw, normally it's the previous week's ranking (but in Indian Wells and Miami case the draw comes out AFTER the new ranking is released)

2. Round off all scoring pts to the nearest integer, eg. 10.49 = 10 but 10.50 = 11.

3. In case of unranked player or a player who has less than 20 ranking pts, he is allocated 20 pts for the calculation of PAW scoring points.
Cervantes, have you been calculating De Bakker's scoring points applying #3?

I don't know, I'll go with the majority vote. Although I like to give as many wild cards as possible (especially to new people), players who've been playing the game for a while should know the rules and commit in the proper place. It's just easier to go through the list once and not have to worry about people who 'commit' in the tournament thread.

Yes, I have. Had I used his actual ranking points it would have been 100+ points for his win over Benneteau

If a player commits to a tournament, but doesn't play it (doesn't make any picks), does he get any ranking points?
