Default Re: Madrid R2: Dimitrov def. Djokovic 7-6 (6) 6-7 (8) 6-3

So my thoughts on this match: Djokovic was almost trolling out there today, really not sure what was up, he totally blew that 3rd set after he should have put it away, his comment to the crowd was epic though.

Dimitrov has really good ball striking, though he did choke away the 2nd set tiebreak, he REALLY needs to work on his fitness if he wants to be top 20. Ridiculous to be cramping in the 2nd set, no sympathy for that, get with the Haas, Nieminen, Murray, Nadal, Djokovic fitness teams (any of them) and fix it. Still a great hard fought win though.

Also hopefully Novak's ankle is ok, and the crowd was amusing honestly, bit nice to see them not always root for the big 4 against everyone else.

Well, congratulations to Dimitrov fans. Let's hope he gets more fit. On Nole, he will be back. He won't disappear for a year making up an injury. He will hopefully play better at French Open though now I have doubts. The altitude does help the servers though, so who knows.

I wish I had seen this match. Sometimes (all the time) I hate work.

How surprising that Dimitrov won this? Is this the first victory in a Masters event for one of the "new breed" against the top four?

Is it in fact significant for the future, or just an anomaly? Call me a lugubrious so and so, but I fully expect Dimitrov to follow this up with some poor results in the next few tournaments...

It's the first time someone born after 1990 beats Federer, Nadal or Djokovic.

For Nadal it doesn't matter, because he doesn't have to prove he's the king of clay and he's done it all before.

Djokovic never dominated a clay season. This could've been his year and a real legacy builder. These tournaments are more important for his career than for Rafa's.

i agree on the last statement, about the possibility of losing the next round. and also about hating work and missing the tennis! hahah! yup first win among the new breed 90's baby. he has been getting very close, he got a set off nadal in monte carlo and now has taken djokovic out. things are starting look up for the youngsters and i hope it is not a fluke year, but he is only 21 and the possibilities are out there now since a huge mental block has been lifted off. like federer when he first defeated sampras

Right - I thought so. Silly of me to put the "big four", really: no offense to Murray, who is a terrific player in his own right, but it's the three you mention who matter the most.

I'm sure we're not alone in thinking the game is crying out for some new, young challengers to the established elite.

If it's a stylish player like Dimitrov who manages to - finally - rise to the challenge, then all the better. But he needs to do something special at a major and/or win a masters event for me to start getting really excited...

Not just that (which I agree with), it's the first win for a the 90s generation over Fedalovic in ANY event, not just Masters. Surely a good sign for Dimitrov.

How about this: Dimitrov outplayed Djokovic, hit him with variety, depth, pace and slice and kept him off balance most of the match.

Djokovic was very fortunate to win the second set even but from start to finish he looked outplayed today.

Would love to see the MTF reaction if Fed told the crowd to suck his dick.
Then again, crowds don't usually need to boo him.

Novak doesn't need to prove that he is the king of clay lol, he did routined rafa in his favourite event, that alone (using your logic) proves that he is the kingslayer, he won't ever dominate clay like rafa did but he has beaten him in all clay masters. I'm sure that after Monte Carlo Novak's mind is only in RG, the real legacy builder.

You don't count the Hopman Cup as an "event", then?

No, I give more credibility to results on my PS3 than exhos. If anyone ever watched an exho, they know that the results are not representative at all.
