Default Aus Open Wed report

Bloody hot day today. Most of my time was spent on the show courts and vodafone as i just had to get out of the sun before i died of heat exhaustion! A lot of the players were suffering too, a lot of tanked final sets bc the players had enough of the heat.

Hrbaty def Tipserevic

Dominik played well for most of the match, but looked shaky in the 3rd and 4th sets. Tipserevic is an ok player and has a good first serve, but his 2nd serve is pretty bad. He didnt have much to hurt Hrbaty with. Dominik was beating him convincingly in the first two sets, and broke early in the 3rd set. Janko was playing badly, and was clearly bothered by the heat. At this point, the vocal Serb supporters decided they'd had enough and deserted Janko
Hrbaty was playing better in the 3rd set and had points to win all of the first 6 games, but only won 4 of them as he didnt take his opportunities. Janko broke back and was up 4-3 on serve when he called the trainer, and just got a massage on his legs while he got a rest from the heat. When he came back on court Janko broke then held to win the set Hrbaty's rhythm was broken and he was playing badly at this point. Early in the 4th set Hrbaty continued playing badly, hitting many balls out, and Janko had the early break. Hrbaty had chances to break back but didnt, and Janko went out to a 3-1 lead. After that Hrbaty got it together again and broke back with great tennis. At 4-3 on serve in the 2nd set, Janko looked hot and bothered so he called the trainer again This time it was for a blister on his hand. However Hrbaty didnt let it get to him this time. He had match points on Janko's serve at 5-4 but couldnt take them. At 5-5 though he broke and served it out. Hrbaty played ok today but he went off the boil too much and let Janko back in, and made it harder than it should have been. He'll have to play better to beat Gaudio in the next round.

Johansson def Calleri

This match went on forever. I saw the 5th set from when Johansson was 4-1 up. It was not very good tennis from either player. Johansson choked when he was serving for the match at 5-3 and also had chances at 5-2 on Calleri's serve but blew them. Calleri fought well and got it back on serve but Johansson broke for the match at 6-5 up.

Nieminen def Srichaphan

I saw the last two sets of this, and they went pretty quickly. Paradorn was not playing well, he made some great shots at times but was too inconsistent. Jarkko retrieved well and was just too solid, he hardly missed a ball and made some great winners on the defense.

Safin def Ulihrach

I saw only the first set. Safin had a slow start and was making many errors, a lot off the first or 2nd shot. He was down a break, i think 2-3, then he changed racquets and started playing well, winning the first set 6-4. When Safin was playing well Ulihrach had no chance.

Bagdatis def Ljubicic

Marcos played very well and I was impressed with him. He has a good serve and nice clean groundstrokes with topspin, he hit some great winners. He had very loud Greek supporters who were bouncing around dressed up in blue and white with flags, looking more like a football crowd than a tennis crowd. Marcos was an exuberant passionate guy himself, he showed all his emotions, pumping his fist, looking to the sky, crossing himself, thumping his heart, it was all there. It reminded me a bit of Larry Passos during a Guga match. Ljubicic didnt play well and in the 4th set looked like he'd had enough after going down a break and i think he tanked. Marcos had a huge smile on his face when he won and was great to the fans, signing autographs on all sides of the court.

Melzer/Waske def Knowles/Nestor

Melzer and Waske played very well and the #1 seeds didnt play their best. They didnt combine well and they looked like they hadnt had much practice or training during the off season. Knowles looked shattered when he lost, with his head in a towel.

Blake/Fish def Fyrstenberg/Matkowski

The Polish pair were pretty bad, especially for doubles specialists. Blake and Fish were much better and were winning easily. They should never have lost the 2nd set, there were many games when they had 0-40 or 40-0 but lost the game and the Polish pair snuck out the set. But Blake and Fish applied the pressure again in the 3rd set and took their opporunities, so the score in the 3rd looked like how it should have been in the 2nd set. There was a guy supporting the Poles, he was Polish himself and looked like a tennis player but i dont know who he was. He had a funny tattoo, with two tennis racquets and tennis balls all around his arm I'm curious to know who it is so I think I'll try to look him up. His name tag said something that looked like Radislav Sblynik, and he looked quite young. Maybe a doubles player.

Johasson def Wessels

This was a routine affair, Pim Pim never looked threatened and one break in each set was all that was needed. Every time Wessels got a break point Joachim saved it with an ace. He looked slightly off on his groundstrokes but his serve was awesome. Joachim choked a bit at the end when serving for the match, he had about 5 or 6 match points but didnt take any of them, and some of them were nervous errors. However he finally managed to seal it. It was not an exciting match but it had some great points. Most of it was just boring big serving.

Thanks for the report Experimentee. I would love to have been at the Johansson v Calleri match even though the result wasn't what I wanted Enjoy yourself if you're going again.
