My mother was not a famous person at all and she died a natural death so it's not exactly something that would be a news item. Hence, it's irrelevant in this particular debate.
They are one and the same. The media is going to run with stories that their readers / viewers want to know about.

We have a six page thread here not because the media is covering the Boston Marathon in greater detail than the earthquake. It's because people are more interested in the former than the latter.

If by "people" you mean americans in particular, then yes.

Americans, other people from developed Western nations. Most Europeans and Anglophones identify more with Americans than Iranians.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's just cultural.

I did not dispute that.

It's just that you casually used the word "people" to refer to americans and anglophones.

'People on this site' is obviously what I was talking about. i.e. 95% Americans, Europeans and Anglophones.

Boy, even the word ''people'' is becoming offensive - the p-word.

I mean, I'm an atheist but you don't see me starting arguments over whether people should "pray" for Boston or the power of prayer. It's just not prudent. I understand that this isn't a totally similar case, but I'd say the same logic applies to both. Refrain and show compassion for a minute and be analytical later.
I'd agree with you if we were standing in Boston, holding this conversation in front of people who were directly involved in it.
We're holding this discussion on a tennis forum.

Furthermore, I don't think that being compassionate and being analytical are mutually exclusive. Discussing how the media covers these issues doesn't mean that you don't feel compassion.

Although the rush to complain about the coverage and the sympathy to the victims was immediate in a thread that seemed go be about the incident and not the failures of the media which are many and various.

Anyway, you all have fun with whatever you are doing, but I think I'm pretty clear on your motivations. If three people died at an international sporting event in Europe, I doubt that we would have these same sort of complaints on this board.

Rest in peace Martin Richard, Lu Lingzi, and Krystie Campbell. I have no doubt you were the light of your families' lives and they had such great hopes for your futures. So much promise in these young people.

You're assuming wrong in my case.
Plus, it's not a matter of "fun". How can people have fun over the deaths and misery of people?
It's a matter of analysing how the media covers it.

If a disaster happened in Europe and another disaster took place in N-Africa around the same time for example, and the media would focus largely on the disaster in Europe, I would have the same problem with it.

Again, this is not a lack of compassion for all who died and suffered. Does one person really have a claim to a higher sensitivity if they post RIP on a tennnis forum? Honestly?
My concern is independent from that. Neither has it to do with an anti-US sentiment you seem to be throwing all too easily at a lot of people. I find the same narrow focus in Europe and it bothers me there too. In fact, I tend to write emails from time to time to news editors, asking for motivations for focusing on news items while briefly mentioning others. Some reply, others don't. News reports seem to be increasingly about tv ratings, which didn't happen when I was little (due to there being only few tv networks so there was no competition to speak of). News reports shouldn't be about what people "want" to hear but about what's actually happening.

Why shouldn't they? News organisations are demand driven. Their job is to provide information to users that is relevant, timely and useful.

What is the point in reporting on stuff people aren't interested in?

It's the news, not Pop Idol.

Not to say that I can understand that people will have a higher interest in what happens in their local community, but a good journalist, a quality newspaper should make an effort to broaden that horizon.

There seems to be some enjoyment. Don't ask me how because it mystifies me,

I would say that all your anger about the coverage of the story (and I do have to say that it is interesting that your outrage focuses solely on the media coverage) is misdirected, it's not the fault of the victims or the United States how your media covers this event. The media in every country can be critiqued over the coverage of any event. Your choosing to only complain about that in a seeming angry and bitter way leads one to conclude that you have some anger about something other than the media coverage. But what do I know? Maybe you are shedding tears over the pictures of the smiling 8 year old boy and your heat is breaking for the family who sent their brilliant daughter to America to study. Maybe those stories don't merely inspire anger at whomever you are angry. Maybe you don't intend for your outrage to hinder expressions of sympathy.

Here's another story to raise your ire and that of others similarly inclined.

Ah, so you are above the majority. I am sure there must be some publications that cater to your broad, deep focus. Why not just read them?

Don't even bother. I could tell you her reading interests, but lets focus on the victims, their families and the many who helped save lives at the scene.
