I wasn't alive when she was in power and I don't follow politics enough to know how her decisions have effected us today.

All I can say is the woman was only doing her job and what she thought was right for the country.

RIP

Maggie wanted people to thrive, those that worked hard did.

23 years on from her last day as Prime Minister the left-wing in this country STILL use her as an excuse for why they didn't succeed. We've since had a Labour government that was responsible for the massive de-regulation on the banking system and which spent and spent until we were ALL forced to suffer for their negligence, yet that gets ignored whenever Maggie is mentioned.

When will they finally move on and stop using her as an excuse?

The problem with your post, whilst it was correct in a great deal of aspects it also ignored the good that she did.

It's impossible to have a balanced argument on the issue and it's a genuine shame that is the case.

It is very difficult. Yes, she did some good things - certainly the unions needed to be brought back under control and purged of the communist influences that were around in the 1970s and 80s, though I think that went too far in the end, for example.

But yes, it's so difficult to have a balanced discussion about her, because she was so divisive and remains so over 20 years since she left office. She is worshipped by one group now as strongly as she is loathed by another. That she was and still is capable of inspiring such strong emotions in people after so long is perhaps her greatest legacy - like her or hate her, she bloody well mattered.

Good post, completely agree.

Saddest thing about it is people celebrating her death. She wasn't Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot.

Somebody's mother has died today. Worth remembering.

She divided the country because divide and rule allowed her to dominate. Turn the middle class against the poor and turn working poor against unemployed poor. The same thing the government is doing right now.

The Labour govt wasn't perfect but the introduction of the minimum wage was crucial for ordinary people who used to go home with pittance working in shitty conditions.

BTW Labour didn't leave a mess- the greedy bankers caused a global recession and the debt was less than the one John Major left in 1997.

This quote is what I always remember about Thatcher

“She has the lips of Marilyn Monroe and the eyes of Caligula.” Former French President François Mitterand.

RIP.
The last truly great leader of the West. Colossal figure who was not a slave to the public and did what she had to do in order to cure the country of socialism. Too bad they don't make politicians like her anymore and all we're left with is a bunch of pygmies and populists.

Leftist journalists, publicists as well as posters here in MTF celebrating the death of someone who was democratically elected thrice was NID. Oh, irony.

I come from an area she hated, treated with contempt and destroyed so don't be coming on here and patronising me when you're on the outside looking in.

The Poll Tax.
The privatisation.
The destruction of the unions.
The miners.
The sale of North Sea oil.
The cover-up of Hillsborough.
The cover-up of Pat Finucane.
Orgreave.
Ravenscraig.
Mandela a 'terrorist'
Support for Pinochet

Fine list of achievements right there. The people of Merseyside will sleep easy tonight.

I don't live in Britain so maybe I don't understand everything, but it seems rather tasteless to celebrate the death of an elderly woman who hadn't had a hand in politics for a long time.

I didn't care for her politics or Regans politics, but certainly I didn't greet news of their deaths with joy. I'm not grieving Ms. Thatcher's death because I had no attachment to her of any sort. But there seem little reason to he overjoyed or to say mean things about her. Every person's story ends with death. Only their lives truly matter. The thread reminded me of Shakespeare:

Quote:
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.

You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment thou art fled to brutish beasts
And men have lost their reason.

Maybe, but engineering a campaign of lies and smears to blame people for their own deaths is beyond all that.

And what was she supposed to do? Keep driving UK further towards socialism? Giving money to those who didn't earn them? Tolerating the parasites in the trade unions?
You know, I lived in USSR and I live in Russia. We had to go through mass privatisation, dissolving the unions, the miners crisis, etc. And we could only dream of tackling all the problems as efficiently as Thatcher did.

I can't comment on non social-economic issues but I read quite a lot about Hillsborough and I don't see how one can conclude Thatcher tried to 'cover up' the tragedy.

And she hated communism (rightfully so) hence her remakrs on Mandela and staunch support for Pinochet.
