The picture of that one is probably the worst I've seen sports injury wise, his shin bending across the turf in a 90 degree angle as his bones snapped. He was forced to retire in the end because of the complications surrounding the injury, but was lucky not to have lost it in the first place.
It's odd that it was basketball. All the other horror injuries in sports that I know of come from American football and soccer. Because in those sports there is the full force and weight of another person that can go against your leg. In this instance it was just a landing from a jump.
