Because the entry list for Houston is always easier than in Europe. Nico needs points and to get his confidence. Which means he has to sacrifice...meaning giving up his beloved Europe for awhile because if he doesn't, he's going to be looking for new employment in 2009. He has to crisscross across the globe going into the easist tournaments offered each week - even if it means going to the North Pole, he needs to go where he can get points and learn how to win again.

And he never goes to Valencia, and Estoril has never been good to him (see his results in Estoril).

He enjoyed playing in Houston last year (even though it was a challenger when he went). Maybe he'll relax and pick up some wins.

Valencia never has a tough entry list ...
And last year it was not scheduled the same week as those two clay tournaments...

Valencia still has better clay court players. The "tough" players in Hosuton are Americans...and we know how they are on clay.

I know you want him in Europe so you can see him ... but I want the best for Nico. And Houston is far better than Valencia. And if he doesn't move up, you won't ever see him in Europe after this year. His career is about to end if things don't improve.

I won't see him if he comes to Valencia or Estoril so that's not the point...

I just think it's a better choice to stay in Europe for the European Clay season instead of traveling again and again...

Us players usually stay in the US as long as possible so easy for them to play Houston as they don't come to MC...

The US players' careers aren't about to end.

Nico unfortunately has to go where he can win some matches. If that means having to go from Chile to Houston to Europe then that's what it means.

Again, I believe that he likes the Houston area. He'll have fun there and hopefully get some wins.

Ahora espera a Carlos Moyá (13º).

thanks for posting the articles FFGC

I disagree with de la Peña. Nico needs winning matches to recover his confidence and to lost in first round against seed players is not better than playing challenger. Of course that's only a step and he doesn't need playing challenger the whole year. De la Peña should better shut up than saying things like that

I'm not sure that I'm reading what Horacio is saying correctly.

He's says that it is dangerous for Nico to play challengers. But I think he is saying that because he thinks that Nico isn't going to play there to try to win the entire tournament. That he's just going to win a couple of matches and not putting his entire effort into it.

Maybe if Nico were going into the challengers with a different attitude, Horacio would be for it?

Is that right?

If Nico is only going to just get a couple matches in, then I agree with Horacio. He should go to win the entire thing.

I posted this on the Chilean thread to see if anyone can help clarify what Horacio is saying.

I think that challengers would be good for Nico. A lot of his problems over the last couple of years has been his tournament selection. Very poorly done. So now he's in the pickle that he's in right now.

He has absolutely no choice right now but to play in easier ATP tournaments and challengers in order to win matches, get his confidence back, learn how to win again, gets points, and move back up the ladder.

If he does anything other than that...he's loco. He's been there, done that, in the Fall in Europe, and it was a miserably bad decision.

Right now he's talking about going to Sunrise then Napoli. He should stick with that.

I hope he doesn't listen to Horacio if Horacio is just merely saying - don't play challengers. If he goes to Europe and tries to get into the Masters Series events there through qualifying, that is THE WORSE possible thing he can do. He'll lose over and over again, and his ranking will continue to drop like the Titanic.

Shut up Horacio, Nico needs to play where he could win some points and confidence ... And with his ranking Nico doesn't have too many options anyway
