Nicolás Massú tuvo debut y despedida en challenger de Lugano

El tenista chileno Nicolás Massú (104º de la ATP) tuvo este martes un debut y despedida del challenger de Lugano, Suiza, tras caer en primera ronda y en sets seguidos frente al alemán Simon Greul (108º).

En un duelo inédito en el circuito, el europeo se vio más entero físicamente y con un claro dominio de los rallies se impuso en la arcilla helvética al doble campeón olímpico con parciales de 6-2 y 7-5.

De esta manera, la tercera raqueta nacional vuelve a dar otro paso en falso en su objetivo de despegar en la presente temporada y volver al grupo de los 100 mejores del planeta. Previamente, el viñamarino venía de alcanzar sólo segunda ronda en Roland Garros y el challenger de Prostejov, en República Checa.

Con este resultado, Greul se verá las caras en los octavos de final con el vencedor del partido que enfrentará al español Pere Riba (144°) y al francés Laurent Recouderc (142°).

El principal sembrado de este torneo, que reparte 85 mil euros en premios, es el local Stanislas Wawrinka (19°).

De la Peña podría ser el técnico de Nicolás Massú

SANTIAGO.- Nicolás Massú está pasando por un mal momento. Está fuera de los 100 mejores del ranking y hace rato que anda buscando la fórmula para mejorar.

Y ahora parece echar mano a un cercano: el argentino Horacio de la Peña, con quien ya ha tenido algún par de conversaciones para convertirse en su próximo coach.

"Tengo que hablar con él, me llamó ayer, todavía no está aterrizado. A mí me divierte conseguir cosas que nadie ha conseguido", dijo a ADN Deportes el trasandino.

El ex técnico de González reconoce eso sí que "real, no hay nada, pero si la pregunta es si quiero entrenarlo, a mí siempre me gustó entrenarlo, hasta cuando estaba con (Fernando) González. Es un tipo muuy talentoso que le pone mucha garra", agregó.

Siguió. "Que voy a tratar de acercarme a ayudarlo, sí. No sé hasta dónde lleguemos, nada más".

De la Peña volvería a dirigir tras su última incursión como técnico en el circuito con su compatriota Guillermo Coria, con quien estuvo durante un breve periodo de un mes y medio en 2007.

It is a joke. Nico is incapable of thinking of anything new....same recycled coaches over and over again. Which will lead to the same crappy results over and over again.

It's not - Nico said that he's considering Horacio. But Horacio says that he's having another kid - he's got like 5 now - andd doesn't want to travel all the time. Supposedly they are still trying to figure it out.

Massú admite que De la Peña puede ser su coach

El viñamarino reconoció que hay contactos con el técnico argentino y éste dijo sentirse halagado de que el ex campeón olímpico sienta que lo pueda ayudar.

Aunque en marzo de 2005 Nicolás Massú entró en la pelea ante la nacionalización por gracia que pretendía otorgársele a Horacio de la Peña, y criticó al técnico argentino por algunos hechos puntuales, lo cierto es que el viñamarino siempre ha admirado y respetado profesionalmente al "Pulga".

Por eso no extraña que el ex entrenador de Fernando González figure entre los posibles nuevos adiestradores del ex campeón olímpico, como lo confirma el propio Massú desde Milán: "Tengo varios nombres en carpeta y no hay más que eso de momento. He hablado con algunos, mi papá ha conversado con otros y entre ellos está Horacio, pero no hay nada avanzado y tampoco me he puesto un plazo. Sólo quiero encontrar al que sea mejor para mí. Entre antes sea, mejor, pero no creo que consiga un técnico antes de un mes. Para la gira de Estados Unidos ya me gustaría estar con alguien".

En Santiago, De la Peña se mostró sorprendido con el hecho de que los acercamientos se hayan hecho públicos. "Hablé hace dos días con Manuel Massú, pero nadie sabía de esto. Estoy muy contento y me siento halagado de que 'Nico' piense que lo puedo ayudar, pero tenemos que hablar y ver un sistema que le sirva a él y a mí. Yo dentro de 10 días voy a volver a ser padre y él ya tiene 29 años y a lo mejor le basta con alguien que lo guíe y que lo acompañe algunas semanas, pero si pretende que yo vaya a todos los torneos, no vamos a poder", adelanta.

Entusiasmado, De la Peña estima que "Nicolás necesita una minipretemporada para volver al circuito a reganarse el nombre que llegó a tener. Le hace muy mal estar perdiendo en primeras rondas, porque te pierden el respeto. Pero me divierte mucho él, porque tiene mucha garra, mucho talento en el derecho, un físico privilegiado y el revés yo se lo arreglo, jajaja".

As much as I'm not thrilled about the #1 choice, I don't know who the others are on the list - maybe Horacio is the best on the list. Knowing Nico, the rest are all a bunch of many times recycled Argentine coaches. He's never going to get the "gringo" or European coach that I want him to get that will work with him on his hardcourt game. He's never going to think outside the box like Fer V did and sign on to work with people like Andre, Gil, and Darren. So again, Horacio might be the best of the choices.

Will also be amusing to see these two go at each other after the "honeymoon" is over. But sad as well - Nico needs a situation where the coach says - do this - and he does it without question. That won't happen with Horacio.

De la Peña y Massú buscan la unión para reactivar sus carreras

Manuel Massú lo deja claro. Para el representante y padre de Nicolás, tanto su hijo como el entrenador Horacio de la Peña "se necesitan".

Detalles salvables separan el inédito acercamiento contractual entre ambos. Las rencillas de antaño, aclaran las partes, ya están en el olvido.

Ahora, ¿por qué se necesitan? La unión de ambos, apuntan, sería una apuesta y, a la vez, un desafío, donde el "Vampiro" tiene más que ganar, a las puertas de cumplir los 30 años y con un rendimiento que lo está llevando nuevamente a disputar challengers y a estar fuera de los grandes torneos.

El viñamarino, consciente de que tiene que hacer un cambio urgente si es que desea salir del pozo en el que se encuentra (marcha 104º en el ranking), optó por invertir en un técnico de mayor currículo, y el nombre del bonaerense es, hasta ahora, la primera opción.

El "Pulga", en tanto, se confiesa un hombre de metas altas. Sus ganas por volver a la primera línea del circuito alimenta esta opción, luego de una mala experiencia en 2007 con el aproblemado Guillermo Coria, quien finalmente se retiró este año, aquejado por sus "fantasmas" internos.

Más allá del dinero

Si bien De la Peña acusa motivos personales para eludir la opción de viajar todo el año de gira con el número tres del país (será padre por quinta vez y tiene una academia), los Massú lo seducen con un contrato más flexible, que sólo le implicaría estar unas 15 semanas de la temporada en viajes permanentes.

Los cercanos a De la Peña apuntan a otro dato: el técnico no se mueve del país por menos de 15 mil dólares al mes, dineros que en ningún caso estaría dispuesto a pagar Massú, por más que sus otros dos candidatos cobren US$ 5 mil más por los 30 días.

El nexo, sin embargo, va más allá del dinero y apunta a la conveniencia de dar nuevos aires a sus carreras y, de paso, potenciarlas.

De la Peña no oculta su satisfacción de haber sido contactado personalmente por Massú. Y ya piensa, medio en broma medio en serio, trabajar el criticado revés del jugador.

"Nicolás necesita en este momento a alguien que se la juegue completamente por él", comenta el ex capitán de Copa Davis de Chile y ex técnico de Fernando González, a quien ayudó a alcanzar el 12º lugar del ATP.

Radicado en un departamento que arrendó en Milán, el viñamarino ya dio un paso al contratar al preparador físico argentino Bernardo Calderón, quien ha visto de cerca el trabajo con Juan Martín del Potro, hoy cinco del mundo.

Nicolás Massú debutará ante Leandro Migani en Challenger de Milán

Nicolás Massú (106° ATP) es el primer sembrado del Challenger del challenger de Milán que se disputará a partir de la próxima semana en la ciudad italiana.

El "Vampiro" debutará en primera ronda ante el argentino Leandro Migani, 317° del ránking mundial y con quien no registra duelos previos.

El torneo, que reparte 30 mil euros en premios más hospitalidad, también contará con la presencia de Guillermo Hormazábal (312°), que tendrá un difícil debut ante el local Filippo Volandri (149°).
