Despite being a hypocritical clown himself, his opinion entails the truth. I mean, come on, just look at these so-called players in today's society: Olderer, Fakervic, Nadull, and Windray (especially him, heaven forbid). Their either pushers, moonballers or serve-botting ballbashers with no game. Including Godbis, we need more players with an attractive all-round game that's good to watch, such as del GOATro, GOATsarevic, GOATnaco and Troicki

Default Re: Gulbis: "Some in top 100 can't play tennis."

I think he is more talented and has more ability than a number of players in the top 100.

But I will always have more respect for a less talented guy who works his ass off and makes the absolute most of what he has than a guy like Gulbis. Gulbis is fortunate enough to be able to travel the world on his father's money, who doesn't have to produce the goods to keep a career going, who doesn't have to make the most of his abilities, and who'd rather party than practice. Then has the nerve to be pissed off that guys who work hard because they have the right work ethic, and because they have no choice in the matter, are ranked higher than him.

Just a dreadful attitude, and I don't think this is the right motivation for him long-term either. He should want to work hard and do better for himself, for his own career, for his own goals, not because he should be ranked higher than Player X. What about when he is ranked higher than Player X? Is it back to the clubs, shopping for skank?

Federer says these type of things masked in boiler plate Sportmanship Award discourse all the time and people don't give him slack for it so why should we do that to Ernesto when he's using a more literal approach?

it's a real asshat thing for him to say, but I hope he keeps playing for years and years to come and starts becoming more revelant, it's always good for a laugh how big his ego is, and he's also good for the occasional upset of players I don't like.

I can't believe you really think that

if Fed had that mind attitude, he would lose far more matches, I can tell you.

He said it one day "when I was young, I was underrating the others and I lost matches because of that, I've stopped doing it for long"

And we have plenty of comments of players who were hardly in the top-100 and had been congratulated by Federer for winning a challenger previous week or something like that.

The only thing he said was opinions about defensive versus offensive tennis about Nadal and all but it was many years ago now. Fed has actually won many matches by "not playing tennis", defending and all.

Do you have examples of words which inspire you that impression ? I would like to understand where it comes from because I didn't have the impression you're the uneducated/speaking only from guts kind of posters.

Gulbis is right, I am quite amazed at some of the players who climb the rankings. Some of them lack any weapon at all.

There are plenty of assholes out there that are honest (about how they feel, what they like/dislike), which doesn't mean I like/respect them any more. Someone can say something horrific and they are honest about it - it still doesn't change the fact that they are assholes. I'm not saying that Gulbis is an asshole, but honesty alone will not make me like/respect you more. Although, it is pretty funny that he says that some top 100 guys can't play tennis, considering that he is just a ball-basher who hasn't won anything significant. First win something worthy, then open your mouth. Otherwise, by his own criteria, one can argue that Gulbis himself is one of those "top 100 guys who can't play tennis."

I am not bothered by the straight-forward and less diplomatic language Gulbis used in this instance, which seems to be the main aspect with the people that got tightened up by this message from him. The bare bones of what he said is basically him saying that he's much better than a lot of other better ranked guys, which is actually true.

Federer on the other hand has had numerous occasions where he said similar things. A couple that come to mind are when at an AO presser he said that for many of the opponents in the first rounds of slams it's an absolute honor and privilege to play him on center court in front of so many people. Occasions that they wouldn't have otherwise.
The prize money thing as well. The raw and first reply was that a lot of guys are just not good enough to make big money from tennis. That changed once the PR guys fed him the right discourse on that matter.

They're both the same thing, except that the sheep out there are more impressed by the Gulbis episode due to a few things.

Personally, I don't mind these type of things but I am a little bedazzled by the double standards and the weak abstract thinking skills of tennis fans regarding these types of situations. That's probably my fault anyway.

OK, I have my opinion on who is "abstract" here and invents things from his dreams like a basic Fed-allergist

I like some of the posts you make when looking at some matches which showed your knowledge of the game, but I had forgotten that on some topics, your guts could talk a lot as well.

Actually, it is an attitude like this that prevents Gulbis from being a decent player. Rule number 1 of any competitive sport, especially individual sports like tennis, is: never, ever underestimate your opponent no matter what their ranking is. I can bet you that Federer/Nadal/Nole/Murray/any real pro never, ever underestimate any of their opponents, regardless of what their ranking is. Gulbis has A LOT of growing up to do if he wants to be a real pro and maybe win some MM event.

You should probably re-asses how much of a Fedtard you are and stop bothering trying to be objective with anything mildly related to him.

I apologize for not writing "him" in capitals.
