Re: Prime Agassi would be No.1 today.
17 year olds who have never seen Agassi play dissing his defense now. Sigh. He's actually not that bad at it. And his game was overall very efficient and clean. He would have done very well in today's conditions.
Who knows if the OP is right or not. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Pointless thread

Agassi would love today's grass and clay, but not Plexi I don't think especially against the brick wall defenders.

His return wasn't that great against Sampras. Yes, Andre was a great player and would do well in today's game, but so would Sampras. Why wouldn't Pet's game benefit from today's rackets? The fact is it has, he has said that he should have changed his rackets before he retired. His backhand is better and more consistant today than in his prime. The fact is that just because Agassi was lucky to win 1 FO and 1 Wimbledon, Pete was the superior player with far superior stats than Andre's. Pete, Roger and Novak, not necessarily in that order, would be the top players today if all were in their prime. Nadal would be the top player on clay, Andre would be #4 on hard courts and grass.

Re: Prime Agassi would be No.1 today.
The thing is, people dont realize how much racquet technology has changed. Returning is a lot easier today than it was before.

Re: Prime Agassi would be No.1 today.
Agassi is easily the best offensive returner ever but defensively he wasn't that great. He would often get aced because of blatant guessing.

sampras the best???
I don`t think so.
I think than sampras would be nº1 in this era too , today I saw delpo suffering with llodra.
and sampras with his serve and short point would be capable to defeat nole , andy and nadal.
because these 3 players needs rhytm for play the best tennis , and sampras with his kind of tennis cut the rhytm all the time.

Re: Prime Agassi would be No.1 today.
Andre, absolutely not! Pete Sampras? Now that's scary. I have no doubt that Pete would be a huge beneficiary of today's science, and would not have a problem meeting/exceeding modern competitors. RG would not matter for him as it didn't then. Really, pete is the only athlete that matched/exceeded Djoker's athletic gifts. Agassi would have difficulty against all the top players who would take the game to him, like pete. Agassi did great against mindless fools with average groundstrokes who tried to match him stroke for stroke from the baseline. The players are smarter today with more variety, and better groundstrokes. Agassi's pièce de résistance was his "pigeon mode"--running from side to side and outhitting his opponents. Match him in that regard, and throw in a little intrique, and he quickly becomes just another pigeon. Oh, and there's the fact that Novak has a more complete game (tennis smarts and mental strength) which makes the difference in todays close and tough matches (ask andy, fed and rafa about that).
I do respect the efforts he made in his last years though and the physical training he went through (the brutal high altitude training), and reminds me of the cardio improvements that djoker made before he took it to 2.0. Still not enough.
