Default How common is it for a player to break into the top 100 yet fail to win an ATP title?

I realise that the top players have each won many, and naturally most of the focus in these forums is on them.

But what about those great players who failed to win one - both past and present? Who was/is the best in your opinion?

I often hear talk about Benneteau, but he still has time.

Is it really sore for those players who are very, very good to miss out on one title?

BTW I'm an avid reader of this forum and have learned so much from other posters in my short while here

It is very common. Think of all the players ranked outside the top 100. They are all still professional but will rarely get near an ATP title.

Thanks.

Who would you class as perhaps very lucky one-time winners, or those who were unlucky losers?

I'm thinking Patrick McEnroe never won a singles title, but he was more of a doubles player?

Benneteau is a good one. At his peak he is an excellent player.

Raonic has won more than one but he is lucky in my opinion. Doesn't have much game apart from serve.

Most(99%) professional tennis players do not win a single ATP title. In fact many 'professional' tennis players do not even win a single match at the ATP level, because the term 'professional' tennis player has a very wide definition and 'ATP title' has a very narrow definition.

Getting to what you probably wanted, there is a thread about the best player to never win an ATP title. You could get many names from there.

The majority of ATP players never win a title. Benneteau is just widely considered the best player to never win one

What is a professional player? Depends on that definition I guess.

A professional tennis player is someone who gets paid to play tennis. The definition cannot vary.

But many players get paid to play tennis at some stages in their career, but in many cases that is never enough to support him. Which I why I doubted that the OP meant that vast definition of professional player, otherwise the answer is pretty straight forward: a very small %. he said: "But what about those great players who failed to win one"... clearly he does not mean all professional players.

Also what tournaments does he mean? ATP tournaments?

Yes - I mean ATP tournaments - sorry about my newbieness..

I guess a good scope would be players who get in to the top 100 plus those outside it who do win a title.

John Marks was Top 50 and AO finalist, but never won a tour-level title - was only on tour for 5 years also. In terms of players with a result as big as that, he's very much an oddity, along with Steve Denton - twice an AO finalist and was World No. 12: never won a title...

You could probbaly change the title again to "how common is it for a player to reach the top100 and not win a ATP title?"

Welcome to the forum, btw!
