And yes, table tennis is more fun and beautiful to watch than tennis, at least for me. But it's not nearly as competitive.

Modern table tennis is very much about taking command of the point and being on attack is the best defense. But spin-wise the game is a lot crazier than tennis and it's not just about topspin. Side-spin, backspin etc. must also be mastered.

Reason both Waldner and Persson for example were still good enough to reach Olympic semi-finals at 40+ is that it's not just about reflexes. It's also a lot about experience. Being able to read spins and patterns of play can count for more than being insanely fast or having great endurance.
Everyone loves Waldner but I really love Appelgren and his style.

Defensive players are amazing BTW. Fast and great movers.

yeah. Appelgreen aka "Äpplet" (the apple) in Sweden. He's a bit underrated. Was a VERY good player. He and Waldner also still play exhibitions.

Imagine this is in 1982

And this is very recent exhibition. More than 30 years later

Possibly my favorite match.

It's from the 2009 World Table Tennis Champions, Round of 16.
Japanese Kenta Matsudaira, who was the junior #1 at the time (ranked 101 in the adult rankings), was taking on Chinese legend Ma Lin (World #2 at the time).
Absolutely amazing atmosphere. If you want to skip straight to the deciding set, go to 6:36.

Ma Lin in blue, Matsudaira in black.

Kinda funny that it was #101 vs #2, while Rosol against Nadal was #100 vs #2

Good example how extreme the side-spin can be around 1:25 too

And here some prime Waldner pulling that stuff off in a real match. Because as people always ask about extreme defense in table tennis: Why doesn't the other guy just smash it in the other direction? well if your defense shot isn't good enough it does end like this

Appelgren is sort of like a tennis who doesn't have a grand slam title such as WC or Olympic singles title.

Though he was successful in the World Cup, WTTTC and European Championship.

Any Waldner compilation is pure magic and talent!

Yeah. But I was reading the youtube comments of the spectacular point in the OP (there's also another 3 parts of that just as spectacular) and people just call Persson "that guy in blue who gets owned" when he is in fact World Champion, European Champion and World Champion in teams, having defeated China multiple times.

Europe has a great tradition of amazing talents. Samsonov has always amazed me because he is very tall and has such feel. Timo Boll is also like a highlight machine. Lots of talent has come from Europe through the decades.

Sure is. Fun fact, he one his first swedish championship in 1983, in 2010, 44-year old, he grabbed his 9th singles title. Now that's longevity but also a bit sad. In the European countries it's hard to develop top table tennis talent these days. Just takes so much practice and insane talent.

Here is sort of a comedy video where they try to answer the question: "How much can material compensate for talent in sports?". The host challenged Waldner to beat him in a set of table tennis using different items instead of racket

There was a similar one that I saw on Ten News this arvo, and it was a similar back-behind shot except it was a winner DTL instead of crosscourt, leaving the opponent completely wrong footed. Insane stuff.

I have always wondered why, is it that hard to change the direction with all the massive spin and so?

yeah, unless the ball is very short, i.e. bounces very close to the net and more upwards so you can stand very close. Then many MTFers could probably even do it

But if a defensive shot comes with massive spin and at least some forward momentum it's very hard. If you try to change direction from a bit futher back the only way to create enough angle is to aim for the edges, then you could easily miss it. Another option is a dropshot but if you accidently get it a big high/long the opponent might run in and smash home the point...

Often it can be a safer bet to aim for the middle with a lot of power, keeping the opponent pinned way back because he's more likely to miss one of the looped defensive shots than you are to miss. Only in very rare scenarios the opponent can counter with his own offensive shot from way back. Those are very high risk shots that miss most of the time.
