Default Artificial grass courts

What do you guys think? We know that many tournaments switched from grass to HC because HC are less expensive to maintain. I read on another tennis board that artificial grass is as easy on your body as regular grass or clay. Has any of you played on artificial grass? Do you see some tennis tournaments adopting this surface as an alternative to HC? Apparently it doesn't require any special maintenance. I really don't know but hope that some of you can share some insights about this surface.

Would Rafa approve ?

Isn't artificial grass basically carpet?

I can not speak about tennis played on artificial grass, but in football (and in a Dutch sport I used to play) it tends to speed up the ball and you are screwed if you make tackles/fall, for it scrapes open skin like few other things. Of course, in tennis that would be less of a problem. A thing that is handy as far as artificial grass is concerned is that the amount of sand you add to the grass influences the speed with which the ball bounces, making it quite simple to change these speeds.

no, not really. I googled it but couldn't get much info. I mostly got some commercial adds.

I play on it almost exclusively...I'm sure lots of people from these parts do too... I'm not sure of professionals playing on it, but I don't see why not. AFAIK, it's fairly customisable, so it can play more like clay, or more like grass.

I played an ITF on articial grass/carpet in Greece, pretty fast, slippery, overall I hated it

cool Slice. I've read that it's highly customizable and they can make these courts slow, mid fast or very fast. I'm wondering if you played on HC too ... how would you compare it with artificial grass? I'm also wondering how pro players feel about this.

Like sam says, it's slippy. You can't get your footing quite as well compared to hard courts, but I would assume that is also the same with real grass / clay. The courts I play on are interesting- if you blast a fast flat shot, it skids off the surface fast, but if you hit a moonball, it will bounce up high and slow... seems like it just sits there.

Back when I used to play a type of artificial grass courts called Omni Courts was my favorite surface. There were a couple of Omni Courts in Stuart, Florida and Knoxville, Tennessee's public courts were identical. The surface resembles astroturf with a tiny amount of sand sprinkled on top. The courts played a bit faster than hartru clay with medium bounces. No court I ever played on was easier on the body.

Fantastic at taking all the skin off your knees, at least when I've tried them.

To be fair, I think they've improved a lot lately.

Whiz and Philo, thanks for sharing your experience. I live in Calgary and I play only on local HC (just a sloppy recreational player here btw ) , but playing less and less lately, just too busy. I've never played on clay or real grass. We all talk about having more variety regarding surfaces, so I don't know maybe these new improved courts could be the answer. Not so sure if the ATP or tournament organizers are willing to experiment. well, they tried blue clay, why not artificial grass

It is the most common surface to play on here during winter. There are some outdoor courts with this surface as well. It is cheap, easy to maintain. I play 90% on it. What I play mostly on is quite slow and pretty high bounce but I've seen faster ones. What I like is you can slip on it like on clay. Bad thing is when you fall down you burn your skin.

Artificial grass should be banned from tennis courts.

So an ATP event on it would be slow like any ATP event.

Anyway, about artificial grass and grass in general. I doubt grass is too expensive to maintain for an ATP event, just think about Germany's interest to get grass events. And don't they resurface HCs quite often? That can't be cheap either.
