Default 2013 and Nadal's unbeatable aura on clay

Note: I'm not a Rafa hater and this is not a mocking thread after his loss to Zeballos.

Serious question. Will other players (top 4, top 30 and maybe even top 100) have more self-belief vs. Nadal on clay?

He's been out for months. Looks a bit heavy (extra holiday weight). His shots may not have the same 'zing' and he just lost a clay final to rank 73 player.

I'm not sure this time we can take Nadal's side of the draw in clay tournaments for granted. We may actually get interesting, never before seen finals.

Or was this lost just an aberration and it will be the same old script over the summer? Thoughts?

I'm sure that this loss will motivate a LOT of other players now. As it stands, his aura is MIA.

He doesn't look heavy at all, and if he is, it's all muscles. His movement is very worrying when he moves to his forehand and needs to put weight on that left leg, looks very awkward to me.

Bet 99% on tour still have brown shorts with the thought of facing Nadal on clay, maybe excluding Djokovic and...dare I say it... Zeballos now

Umm.. When I say he looks heavier, I'm comparing him to Nadal of last year. Not some average joe.

I know you're a troll and trying to score some cheap points with the Nadal hater crowd, but no they haven't. I noticed and said this in his first two matches as well.

This isn't a troll dude, and I'm not a troll, I just tell it how I see it... I'm not trying to score any points with the Nadal hater crowd and you can check all my posts in the threads last night defending Nadal... I've never hated him, never will. Any way my bad, I mis-read I thought you said he doesn't look healthy at all... just woke up

I think the reason his movement looks awkward is because Rafa is cautious and isn't comfortable putting weight on that knee yet. It doesn't necessarily mean he's still injured (could be of course, we don't know how it feels), but it does indicate he's been out for 7-8 months with a severe knee injury and isn't in prime condition yet.

Yeah. It's no secret how Nadal likes to be in a strict ruitine with things, and if he's thinking about movement all the time it's going to through him off from the norm.. Nothing to worry about yet in my opinion though, he showed slow improvements during the week.

As for the thread question, my answer is no. Nadal has lost on Clay before, and even thought his losses have came against top players, those top players still haven't gained the upper hand over Nadal on clay.

Personally I think this loss is an aberration but it's too early to tell.

For sure other players will have more self-belief going into matches against him but on paper he will still remain the favourite for every match he plays on clay. Furthermore it will only take a string of victories in the next few clay tournaments (a likely outcome IMO) for that aura to have been rebuilt. But I agree that until then, some opponents will certainly believe that they have a fighting chance against him.

I haven't seen the match but from what it sounds, Zeballos played amazingly. For others to replicate his feat, they too would have little room for error.

GSMnadal's reasoning that Rafa was being very cautious with regards to his knee is of course a very plausible one. I am sure he will be much better at ascertaining how far he can safely push through the pain barrier in the coming weeks.

Remember Clay season of 2010? When everyone said Soderling exposed his weakness to 'big hitters', figured out Rafa on clay and broke through the unbeatable aura? Refresh my memory, did Nadal lose a match on clay that year?

Whether the aura is there, if Nadal get's in decent shape he wins. They can think they have a chance beforehand all they want, but that won't matter in the end. The match will always be on Nadal's racquet.

maybe his aura is shaken a bit, but his tennis abilities are not, and gradually he'll be getting better to show all these 73rd players their correct place

it's obvious vina rafa wasnt the rafa we know and that he will be in monte carlo already
