Default Eddie Herr International Junior Championships

I was just wondering if anyone on these boards will be going to this tournament? It's in Bradenton, Florida. Normally, I have only glanced at junior tournaments that are in the 16s & 18s. The first time I ever followed Junior's closely was in Marcos Baghdatis's last few months as a Junior.

Anyway, i'm kind of curious to know about one of the kids in the 12s. If anyone is going, can you please let me know? Thanks.

Default Re: Eddie Herr International Junior Championships

From ITF Website:

Chardy and Niculescu dominate Eddie Herr International
The ITF Junior Circuit arrived at the Bollettieri Sports Academy in Bradenton, Florida last week for the Grade 1 Eddie Herr International Junior Championships. It was the first of three tournaments that make up the Florida Winter International Junior Circuit.

It was business as usual in the singles events as both the boys’ and girls’ top seeds, Frenchman Jeremy Chardy and Monica Niculescu from Romania, took the spoils as predicted by the organisers.

Chardy, ranked 35 in the world, disposed of Belarusian Serguei Tarasevitch in the semifinals of the boys’ singles 61 64 before meeting David Navarrete (VEN) in the final. The Venezuelan had not reached the quarterfinals of an ITF Junior tournament since the Grade 2 Uruguay Bowl in February. In contrast, his semifinal opponent, Donald Young (USA) was in good form after victory at the North/Central America Closed ITF Junior Championships (Grade B1) in October and was tipped by many to go all the way here. Therefore, the seventeen-year old lefthander from Caracas showed great verve to come back from a set down to halt the progress of the Chicago born and raised second seed 26 63 63 and book his place in the final.

The only time that Navarrete and Chardy have previously met on the ITF Junior Circuit was back in January of this year when Navarrete thrashed the Frenchman 60 61 in the first round of the Coffee Bowl (Grade 1) in Costa Rica. However, there was to be no repeat of that whitewash as Chardy, Wimbledon semifinalist this year, dominated from the outset to win the final and lift the trophy 61 64.

Monica Niculescu, finalist in 2003, went one better this year cruising to the girls’ singles title very efficiently. Apart from the early departure of Julia Cohen (USA) in the second round to Valerie Tetreault (CAN) 62 64, there were no real surprises in the girls’ event.

As forecast, Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) and Marina Erakovic (NZL) dominated the lower half of the draw before coming head to head in the semifinals. Their last and only previous meeting on this circuit was a year ago at the Yucatan Cup in Mexico when Erakovic proved too good for her opponent. However, after a tight first set and tiebreak it was the Slovakian who went on to dominate in the second set and proceeded to the final 76 (6) 61. However, against Niculescu in the final, Cibulkova failed to gain control of the match and could do little to prevent the determined Romanian from running away with the final and the trophy 61 60.

Unlike the singles events, the outcome of the doubles events did not follow the seeding. The boys’ trophy was won by Americans Jesse Levine and Michael Shabaz who defeated eighth seeds Alexander Dolgopolov (UKR) and Billy Timu (CAN) 63 57 76 (2), the only seeded pair to reach the semifinals. In the girls’ doubles final Romanians Mihaela Buzarnescu and Sorana-Mihaela Cristea overcame the top seeded pairing of compatriot Niculescu and her partner, Erakovic (NZL) 64 36 64 to take the title.

This week the circuit moves on to the Grade 1 USTA Winter Championships where Katerina Bondarenko (UKR) will strive to stay in touch with Michaella Krajicek (NED) in the race to become ITF Girls Junior World Champion for 2004. This tournament precedes the ITF Junior Circuit’s final Grade A tournament of the year, the highly prestigious Orange Bowl, which takes place the following week.
