The team consisting of Rik de Voest, Wesley Moodie and the promising Fritz Wolmerans won all 15 singles and doubles games without conceding a set and will be promoted to Euro-Africa Group II in 2008 -- still a long way off the pinnacle performance of becoming Davis Cup champions in the 1970s. "The opposition in Tunisia might not have been of the most formidable nature," said South African Tennis Association CEO Ian Smith on Monday, "but it was a sterling performance to win 30 sets in a row." Smith pointed out, however, that Euro-Africa Group II presented a far more daunting challenge. South Africa's white-washed "victims" at the Avenir Sportif de la Marsa Club in Tunis were Mauritius. The Ivory Coast and Ghana in the first round robin segment and Tunisia and Madagascar in the qualifying round for promotion. In all, 180 countries compete in Davis Cup competition -- second only to soccer as the sport with the highest number of competing nations. The prestige World Group consists of the top echelon of 16 countries, with Russia the 2006 champions.
Nice of them to mention Jeff in there

Default Re: South Africans

After the Euro/Africa Zone Group II 2nd Round & Play-off matches, it is now easier to have a look at potential opponents for SA in 2008, having been promoted into Group II.

The first round of the group will see 8 ties played across the 4-6 April - and the other teams in the group are as follows:

Slovenia (lost in 2nd round)
Greece (lost in 2nd round)
Finland (lost in 2nd round)
Hungary (lost in 2nd round)
Denmark (won in Play-offs)
Ukraine (won in Play-offs)
Cyprus (won in Play-offs)
Algeria (won in Play-offs)

Egypt (promoted)
Ireland (promoted)
Tunisia (promoted)
South Africa (promoted)

Macedonia OR Luxembourg (21-23 Sept)
Portugal OR Netherlands (21-23 Sept)

The above two ties including Macedonia, Luxembourg, Portugal and the Netherlands will be played in a couple of months, and the losers will be relegated into Group II, and so will also become potential opponents for the SA boys. I would expect to see Macedonia and Portugal drop down, but you never know in DC! Anyway, some exciting prospects for matches - I have my fingers crossed for away ties against most of them, as the European destinations aren't too difficult to get to, Finland, Denmark & Cyprus look particularly appealing (plus, I would like to see Baghdatis or Nieminen play). I will report back in September, and then when the draws are made.

Macedonia won 3-2 against Lux, and the Netherlands ended up as 5-0 victors, so both Luxembourg and Portugal are relegated into Zone II, and thus the final list of teams will be:

Slovenia (lost in 2nd round)
Greece (lost in 2nd round)
Finland (lost in 2nd round)
Hungary (lost in 2nd round)
Denmark (won in Play-offs)
Ukraine (won in Play-offs)
Cyprus (won in Play-offs)
Algeria (won in Play-offs)
Egypt (promoted)
Ireland (promoted)
Tunisia (promoted)
South Africa (promoted)
Luxembourg (relegated)
Portugal (relegated)

The ITF have announced that the draw for the 2008 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas will take place on Thursday 27 September 2007 in London, at the BNP Paribas offices at 12:00 pm local time.

The draw will be live on www.daviscup.com

The draw for Europe/Africa Zone Group II 2008 is complete. South Africa faces Finland, whom is seeded, with choice of venue decided by lot in the Finn's favour. First round ties are to be played on 11-13 April 2008.

I will definitely go to this tie, wherever it will be in Finland (I hope in Turku, because I live there ). I wish that Wayne Ferreira would come with the team... *sigh*

SA's Davis Cup shake-up

December 23 2007 at 10:32AM

By Herman Gibbs

South Africa's Davis Cup fortunes have been bolstered with the staging of training camps for the squad.

For the past few years, financial restraints made it impossible for the tennis team to train together at all.

However, now that the team has been promoted to Group 2 of the competition, funds have become available and South Africa's Davis Cup captain, John-Laffnie de Jager, will be staging training camps for the squad.

The first of these, lasting just over a week, has just run its course in Cape Town, where De Jager was assisted by international renowned clinical kinesiologist Richard Sutton, who has worked with several top tennis players like Germany's Tommy Haas and Russian Marat Safin.

Last year, the former world No 1 Martina Navratilova, praised Sutton after he treated her injured knee, which has been quite troublesome while playing celebrity events over the past few years.

De Jager has also called on a sports psychologist to assist with the players' mental conditioning while in Cape Town.

The squad also had a session with Sherylle Calder, the visual skills specialist, who was a member of the Springbok World Cup support staff. Calder first won a RWC medal in 2003, when she was a member of the England Cup staff.

The funding for the squad has improved mainly because of the results attained in 2007. South Africa made a clean sweep of the competition in the Europe/Africa Group 3, winning all five of their ties.

De Jager said the next camps would be held in February and April. South Africa is scheduled to play Finland in Helsinki on the weekend of April 11 to 13.

The squad will be built around the players that featured prominently this year, winning all five ties in Africa with whitewash margins. They are Rik de Voest, Wesley Moodie, Fritz Wolmarans, Jeff Coetzee, Kevin Anderson and Chris Haggart.

De Jager has also selected a group of promising youngsters to train with the squad, and they will provide back-up in the event of injuries.

De Voest and Moodie will be the first-choice players for the singles. De Voest has been playing steadily on the ATP tour this year and has attained a career-high world ranking of 110.

Moodie has been battling with injuries for the few months and is currently at 162 in the rankings. He reached a career-high of 57 two years ago.

Coetzee and Haggart are the key doubles players, and they will prove to be a formidable pairing next year. Both are doubles specialists, with Coetzee rated at No 29, and Haggart at 48.

However, Coetzee will be teaming up with Moodie for several tournaments in 2008.

Several Cup squad members will be playing in the Australian Open next month, and that was the main reason for choosing Cape Town as a training venue.

"We wanted to get away from the high altitude and the weather in Cape Town is similar to what the players will experience in Melbourne.

The SA team don't know what court surface to expect when they play Finland, but De Jager feels that the tie will be staged indoors. "Most of the players prefer to play on hardcourt," he said.

The two countries have only met once previously in Davis Cup competition. In 1961, South Africa defeated Finland 4-1, when Abe Segal was the team's mainstay.

I think Ullyett is probably doing them a favour by not playing. This way, younger and less experienced guys get to play, and the team will also be at a realistic level. Ullyett can only do so much, plus he is getting on, and DC can be pretty demanding. He would only be around for another few more years max, and then they would be thrown in at the deep end.

Thanks a lot for the above article by the way.

Thanks for the article. It's odd that the South Africans seem to know that the tie against Finland will be played in Helsinki. I've tried to ask from the Finnish Tennis Federation about the location and they haven't answered me... I guess it's anyway safe to assume that it will be played in Helsinki.
