Federer to Play Basel - No Appearance Fee or Contract
This news is a bit old but didn't find a thread so made a new one. Federer has suddenly committed to the Swiss Open in October and may skip Shanghai and Paris just to play it.

Any Thoughts?

Swiss media writes that he won't receive any apperance fee as long as he won't have a new contract with the tournament.
On the other hand the tournament can't use him for promotion.

Re: Federer demanding much bigger appearance fees from Basel
Actually Fed said he will play there without any contract or apperance fee if he has to. My guess is that now this thread will be filled with MTF posters apologizing and admitting that they were wrong...

Re: Federer demanding much bigger appearance fees from Basel
If he actually plays Basel and skips two Masters 1000's I'd be surprised.

Roger got asked about Paris-Bercy in his interview in which he announced that he would play in Basel though:
Does it mean that you are going to skip Paris-Bercy again then?
Roger's answer:
I have often missed tournaments due to the Swiss Indoors, so it’s nothing new. I love to go to Asia or Paris but you have to set priorities and Basel has always been one of my priorities.

Looks like he's now trying to do some damage control to save his reputation after all the criticism he got. And the still ongoing negotiation show me that he still wants to get as much as $$$ from this tournament as possible because otherwise I wouldn't see what would be the problem with the tournament organisers and the negotiations...

Re: Federer demanding much bigger appearance fees from Basel
If Fed does not have a contract TD can not his tournament with Federer image no TV interviews nothing. But TD can use Wawrinka or Del Potro images because they have contracts. So good luck to TD so he can sell his tickets.

Please tell me you aren't this simple
After months of bad press for being a greedy scumbag his team finally notices the loss of income due to the bad press is bigger than the potential appearance fee and now you have the audacity to claim that Federer is a saint?

Damned if he does; damned if he doesn't.

Whenever he does, I doubt he would retire at Basel. IMO, he will at Wimbledon, USO or WTF.

Enough already, no one said he was a saint.
Fed is not a greedy scumbag nor a saint, but there's really no reason for him to play for free. Everything is not in black and white, this is a child's logic.
