They have a big pool from which to grow talent- 1.2B+. If you're Chinese you as well as I know it's all about 1. Popularity of the sport 2. Resources 3. A bit of luck.

Seeing as you dominate pingpong and badminton, and lately showing progress in athletics aswell, why not? I'd say within a decade a "Federer" effect should be fully visible. No clue about the state of tennis in China though, or how supported it is via the party/state.

By the looks of it Korea/Japan will get one first.

I hope that if it happens, it'll be someone with major weapons and/or a master tactician. If it's got to be someone of average height (i.e. under 6ft), I want us to have a Davydenko, a Rios, or a Grosjean. Having a Nalbandian would be beautiful.

If Serbia can do it with a piss poor infrastructure, population, and tennis interest, then there is absolutely no reason China can't as well.

Height? Overlap of talent pool with traditionally strong sports?

On average China may be shorter, but its sheer population means that there will be more tall people in China than in smaller countries like Serbia. I agree that the second thing you mentioned could be a problem. It all depends on whether or not they are pushing children to become better at other sports rather than tennis.

There are way more tennis players in China than Serbia, and I'm pretty sure there are also more tall tennis players in China.

The question is, are they teaching them in China to play tennis the successful way? I have noticed a large majority of Asian players build their game on moving side to side and redirecting the ball, rather than planting their feet and then striking. Maybe that way is not so successful in this current era. In the women side, that style of play works, as you see Li, Peng, Zheng, and Zhang all in the top 100.

Or maybe they teach too much conformity in general instead of developing individual unique talent.

Anyway, the best two Chinese players currently are Di Wu and Ze Zhang, and both have nothing special in their game. I am guessing the Chinese will have to wait a while for their male tennis star.
