Djokovic's net play and volleying has improved tremendously during the past year.

his slice held ground in the finals. most of his net ventures were putaways, but still...much more of them than before.
it is evident that he is trying to plug some holes. he will never be the slicer or volleyer on par with fed and muzza, but it is perhaps easier to improve a glaring weakness than to improve on your best shot.
i'm still not sold on the overheads. let's see if he can sustain not smacking them all over the place.

LOL @ this molasses court grinder improving his net skills; why would he when he can just stay back 90 miles behind the baseline and retrieve balls all day?

net plays - yes definitely, in fact I've always thought he was a decent net player (well at least from 2011 onwards)

overheads - fuck no

Agree with this. He is no natural in going forward, but is intelligent enough to work on his flaws and definitely showed in that final that the intent to be somewhat more often around the net is there.

Still not sold on his overhead smashes improving - I still close my eyes everytime he is about to hit a smash whenever he plays one of the other Top 4. To this day, I still think that simple botched overhead on MP against Rafa at the 2008 Olympics dented his confidence when hitting smashes.

His net play is average but I liked that he was courageous enough to venture forward towards the net in the AO 13 final against Murray. In previous years, Nole used to avoid the net as though there was an electric fence around it.

I haven't read the thread but his overheads can hardly get worse, can they? And I always thought Novak had a very sense of when to come to the net even if his execution and general net skills were not of the highest order.

Normally Novak has pretty bad netplay, but it was ok during the final. So kudos for at least being average.

I think the biggest reason for the efficient numbers was that for whatever reason, Murray was off on his passing shots. He missed a number of them, including some lobs, etc. This from a guy with some of the best counterpunching in the game, so it was rather surprising.
