Mr. Q, you've studied Russian?

BTW I voted Spanish. I really hope I can take up studying it some day!

I really wish I knew German better. My French, Spanish and Russian are fine but I've always had a kind of "mental block" about German and really struggle when I go to German speaking countries and get very annoyed with myself.

Wow, somebody who is interested in German...
that's not very often because it's not the best sounding language and IMO overall more difficult to learn than Spanish, French, English...

Mr Q!!! Truely a man of many talents! WOW!!!!! Yeah, we know already that you like Russian composers!
I won't switch to my Russian keyboard here either then but I must say your Russian is remarkable for a person who has studied it only 1 year!

It's the grammar that is shitty about German. I mean the compound words and the pronounciation for myself aren't very difficult, but all the grammar crap put me off paying attention in language class.

Can only agree with what you say. Grammar is very often difficult to learn and same is true for the strict word order.

Well I had to learn German in school for a while, plus I spent some time in Austria and Switzerland as well. Actually to the ear I find it a lot easier to listen to the German spoken in Austria or Schwyzertüütsch than standard German.

The word order isn't so bad, but the other grammar rules really piss me off then again I was making progress with one good teacher, then the other one afterwards well she was like the way I feel about some of the Roddick fans here.

From a very good source try this Q vBulletin supports Cyrillic characters, or use http://www.translit.ru

Coming from Bavaria which has a very similiar dialect to the Austrian one, it's not difficult to understand for me that you like listening to these dialects, but for most foreign-speakers, the more difficult question would be if it's "only" nice for the ear to listen to it or if you can also understand it well enough. I know from lots of foreigners (most of them are Turkish), that they have their difficulties when they were taught some standard German in courses and then during their daily real life lesson they find it hard to understand something because the way how people in certain regions are talking and the way how things are differently said or pronounced are causing problems for them.

That is actually more of a problem in Switzerland I think. They have to learn to read and write standard German, but rarely use it or do everything they can not to use it. I have a Swiss friend who will never speak standard German, at the same time immigrants need to learn the standard as it gives them better opportunities to read the newspapers, follow the TV too bad they still persist in dubbing instead of using subtitles for non-German language programs and the other media forms which are very rarely written in dialect. It really doesn't matter whether it's too much of a regionalism as long as they are able to be understood.
