Default The future of tennis in Finland?

hi guys,

taking a look at finland´s davis cup team its obvious the future doesnt look great for finnish tennis

nieminen getting old and losing ranking positions
timo nieminen mostly the same
kontinen brothers, specially henri, getting injured all the time
heliovaara also injured and struggling with confidence
juho paukku just cant win a match lately, injuries...
laaksonen not a finnish, playing for switzerland

what is going on? had you taken a look at finland´s tennis at 2009, 2010, 2011, future was way better with henkka there trying to break into top 200 as a youngster, micke also climbing, heliovaara, paukku...

im starting to get really worried. something really has to change in finnish´ tennis. henri kontinen is a huge talent but he needs to stay healthy from now on. micke, juho, harri...should stop gettig injuried again and again and again too

i mean, last year they lost in DC to denmark, with nielssen as number 1. next week they face bulgaria and it will be really tough, considering nieminen wont play, and both kontinen are not ready yet, heliovaara stuggling a lot...

Questionable timing considering the Shark just beat Hasigoat in 5 sets...

nieminen is 31 y.o.(turning 32 this year) and is ranked 70th this week. i dont think he will be playing for many more years. plus i was talking about few players more than only jarkko!

How much people follow tennis over there? I imagine it must be tough to get much attention when the winter sports are as big as they are

You're right, sadly. Things would be much different with a healthy Henri Kontinen, he made a great team with Jarkko two years back. His knee operation seems to have gone well though, one can only hope. Don't have high hopes for anyone else, Micke is probably too small to make it and Harri had a poor year last year, hope he can bounce back.

We have some possibly promising juniors but that's about it... Jarkko just started a tennis academy here in Finland so that's great news for the future at least.

Only Del Potro can take him out before the semis, and he won't. Nadal is winning the AO, bet your house on it.

i still have confidence on micke. i know he doesnt have the physical abbilities or talent of henkka, but he can do more than he is doing at the moment

as for harri, yeah, he was top 250 for almost first half of the season, but he started to lose every match...i dont think he can be a top 100 player but a top 250, maybe top 200 playing events in asia and so...i think its possible!!

timo nieminen is also 31 y.o. turning 32 this year...

what do you think about paukku maybe?

tell us about the promising juniors please...sadly no finnish players played australian open 2013 in juniors =( but pollanen or sillanpaa maybe can do something in the future...

I think Paukku will probably have a career like Timo Nieminen... he's very talented and has nice firepower (and I've heard he's a really nice guy ) but he seems a bit too hot&cold, not consistent enough.

Pöllänen and Sillanpää come to mind when talking about potential future players. Pöllänen has a nice game. But it's of course purely speculative at this point...
