Hmmm...I can only look at the last few posts by hitting on "quote". Strange things happening on MTF yet again.

Ask Europeans to fill a map of the US... Wouldn't be much more brilliant

Still bigger than the entire Europe

Would you be able to put every single African country on a map (and name their capitals)? I bet most Europeans couldn't.

Oh please. People learn about European history at school much more than about Africa or America so they should know Europe better. I understand them not knowing where Latvia is but Austria? Poland? Greece? Portugal?

You know I used to, I excelled in it (knowing every single country and capital), but not any more, sadly.

Rafa is Mallorca, no? Like someone said that Federer is Switzerland. (Or I'm sure many people have said. )

Europeans learn about the European geography, which makes sense, but why would Americans bother more with Europe than Africa or Asia? It's not like Europe is the center or the universe, is it?

Oh, please, of course it is

And I bet the Americans would far even worse with African and Asian countries

I was talking about history, not geography. Yes, I assumed that you need to know where the countries are when you talk about history but maybe you don't think so. Fine. Let's just learn about everything that happened in the last 1000 years without any maps

Depends on what a person's definition of Europe is.
USA - 9,826,675 km².
Europe - 9,938,000 km². Including European Russia & the three former Soviet caucasus republics & excluding 99% of Turkey.

As if the European borders (and country names) didn't change the past 1000 years

Why do you want to fight with me? Sure, some names changed but that shouldn't be much of a problem if one learned also something about the WW1 or WW2 or anything about the 20th century. And anyway, I'm pretty sure Greece is where it always has been but only one person wrote it on the map and even then it was with a question mark.

On a 'positive' note, at least you're not constantly ignored like most folk.

Bill Bryson (extract from Notes from a Big Country)

A few years ago an organization called the National Endowment for the Humanities tested 8,000 American high school seniors and found that a very large number of them didn't know, well, anything.
Two-thirds had no idea when the US Civil War took place or which president penned the Gettysburg Address. Roughly the same proportion could not identify Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill or Charles de Gaulle. A third thought that Franklin Roosevelt was president during the Vietnam War and that Columbus sailed to America after 1750. Forty-two per cent - this is my favourite - couldn't name a single country in Asia. <T(er)TF.

I am not fighting with you. Merely expressing a different opinion I just don't think that the whole world should know the European geography off by heart.
