Neethling Takes Lange-term View in Pretoria

25-May-2006 Craig Lord

Ryk Neethling, Olympic relay champion for South Africa and one of the world?d most versatile swimmers, is to train at his national training centre in Pretoria under the guidance of Dirk Lange, the succesful German sprint coach.

Neethling is still enjoying a break after a hectic and exhausting season, during which he won the overall world cup title, took honours at the Commonwealth Games in March and won three gold medals at the world short-course championships in April. A former Arizona Wildcat, Neethling had been training at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. However, Lange expressed his confidence in Lange, South Africa?s head coach, and will return to training at his country?s swimming HQ.

"Dirk and I work very well together," Neethling told Neville Smith at the RSA federation. "After the Commonwealth Games it would have been easy to say it wasn?t worth going to the World short-course championships in Shanghai because I wasn?t so into it or whatever but Dirk really kept me focused and helped me to give it 100 per cent."

Lange coached for many years in Hamburg before leaving Germany for South Africa. His charges have included sprinters Sandra Voelker, Therese Alshammar and Mark Foster, among many others.

The Pretoria centre is, said Neethling, the closest South Africa comes to reproducing the wonderful environment at Tuscon in Arizona, his base for eight years and the centre where he trained alongside fellow South African Roland Schoeman and Britain's Simon Burnett with coaches Frank Busch (head coach and middle to distance group) and Rick Demont (sprint coach and former world record holder over 400m).

"In Joburg I spent a lot of energy trying to keep on that professional level but that will be much easier in Pretoria when I will be surrounded by people who are striving for the same thing as I am," he said. "In Sandton, where I was staying, I think people are more concerned with drinking coffee and looking good. And while I?ll miss living in Joburg, but the Olympics are only two years away and that goes by in the blink of an eye, so this is what needs to be done," said Neethling.

Neethling will return to training in July and aims to compet at a short-course event in Hamburg in August.

"There is no rush for me. I want to do this right and so my next major competition will only be the World Championships in March next year," he said.

Thorpe Puts Comeback On Ice

25-May-2006 Craig Lord

Ian Thorpe's comeback to international racing has been delayed yet again: the double Olympic champion has abandoned plans to attend the Mare Nostrum Tour with the Australian team in June. He is now likely to race again until the Australian trials for the world championships in December.

Instead of heading to Europe, Thorpe will stay at home to concentrate on training his way back to full fitness after suffering a glandular-fever-type viral infection at the beginning of the year. Last month he broke a bone in his hand in an accident at home.

Alan Thompson, Australia head coach, told the media: "After talking it over with his coach Tracey (Menzies), Ian has decided that he will be better served staying in Sydney and training over the next couple of weeks. The virus that forced him out of the Commonwealth Games took him a while to recover from and then he suffered a further setback when he broke his hand. Ian's health and his hand are coming along well but we feel he is not quite ready to race yet and he will dedicate all his time to regaining full fitness."

Thorpe's aim is to defend at least one of his Olympic titles - more likely over 200 than 400 metres as things stand at the moment - in Beijing in 2008. His last big race was at the Athens Games in 2004.

Neethling Medals Stolen

04-Jun-2006 Craig Lord

Thieves broke into the Johannesburg home of Ryk Neethling, the Olympic relay gold medal winner, and stole at least 20 of his medals, including prizes from the world championships and Commonwealth Games.

Neethling's medal from South Africa's victory in the 4x100m freestyle at the Olympic Games in Athens, 2004, was not among the items stolen.

"It's almost impossible to insure those kind of medals," Neethling told a South African Radio station. "The robbers aren't going to find any gold in there but they are irreplaceable."
