I never thought Labadze was your type.

Default Re: Roberto Carretero.

Hi, I just saw the title of the thread and "Roberto Carretero" caught my eyes.
I never saw him playing but somehow his name is familiar to me.

His GF, a Spanish singer called Silvia Pantoja, released a song "Mi Madre" (or something like that)
and in its music video appears Carlos Moya. Carretero and Moya are good friends.
They once played doubles in Umag - I heard that after 5 games or so they scored their very first point.
I've got a picture of them celebrating the point and a few more pictures of Carretero - well, actually
they are pictures of Moya; Carretero happens to be there, too.

So, Leena, if you want I can scan the pictures (by digital camera) and email it to you
when I'm back home (around 20th December).
If you so wish, maybe you could PM me so that I remember it after 2 weeks.

*biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig bump*

Roberto is back! Well - he's in the first round in the Umag doubles draw partnering Moya, at least

Roberto's career doubles record is 1-5 but if he can avoid watching the sexy, bikini-wearing Croatian girls in the stands, he might get doubles win #2

I'm tipping Roberto as July's Bandwagon Player of the Month

Carretero was also a former French Open Junior champ. But his weight problems may have hindered his game.

I saw quite a bit of that Hamburg 1996 tournament. I was very very impressed with Carretero. He was particularly efficient when serving at the ad-side. His kick.serve had wicked side-spin, which forced his opponents way out of court to retrieve his serve. He then used his big forehand to play for the crosscourt winner on the next shot. It worked wonders, really.

I remember the Eurosport commentators stating that this guy was simply too talented for Corretja - I bet they would have been surprised to learn that it was Corretja who went on to greater things, not Carretero.

A lot of people predicted big things for him after that tournament. Tennis Magazine even predicted that he could do big things at Wimbledon. As we all know, nothing happened.

Carretero used to play juniors with Corretja and Costa and had a lot of talent, but he had knee problems and the first one held him up when he played on the circuit.

Yes, the Eurosport commentators would be surprised for sure that Corretja went further especially then all he had was a slice backhand and couldn't or wouldn't come over the ball.

Then Roberto got injured again, had a good time and piled on the beef.

Default One-time wonders - Roberto Carretero - Hamburg 1996 champion

Roberto Carretero (born August 30, 1975 in Madrid) is a Spanish former professional tennis player. He won one singles title, the 1996 Hamburg AMS.

Carretero, a former junior French Open Champion shocked the tennis world by winning the title in Hamburg as a virtually unknown player ranked outside the top 300. En route to the title he defeated two top 100 players, two top 20 players (Washington and Boetsch), and most notably, Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the semi-finals, and Ŕlex Corretja in the final. After winning the title, Carretero lost in the first round of Roland Garros and did not have any significant results other than winning a Challenger tournament held in Sopot, Poland in 1999.

He retired from professional tennis after the 2001 season.

I'd like to read more one-time wonder stories if you are aware of any...AMS, GS and ISG level...

ROGER FEDERER: No, Roger Federer doesn't pull out. Otherwise he doesn't walk on court (smiling).
