Better question. If Djoko had Fat Dave would he have won a slam?

Hewitt and Roddick weren't exactly old when they started being passed by the current generation in the rankings.

tbf Hewitt was injured.

And while Nadal would've dominated clay at any era (except maybe the late 70's), he would not have done particularly well off clay in another era - not just down to quality of competition, but also surfaces. Nole and Murray would do pretty well (although I doubt that Nole touches grass or Murray does much on clay) but not to the same extent as Federer. Federer seemed unbeatable from 04-07 - Nole didn't at any time except for 2011, let alone Murray.

Great player, but let's face it, never did it when it mattered. He's not beaten a top 4 player outdoors since WTF 2003 (Houston, JCF).

You could say the same of Davydenko, Blake, and Ljubo. Even at their peaks, none of these guys are beating 2011+ Djokovic in a slam.

This is all subjective and not one answer here holds any significance. It's like, putting Federer in Borgs era, and then seeing how he would have gotten on with their technology, different gameplay, players with different styles, guys in different primes of their career.

It's also why I have trouble with people who call some tennis generations as weak eras. Again, it's all subjective. Unless they are two guys at either end ranked 1 & 2 who can't hit a barn door with a tennis ball then okay, weak era it is.

The 'weak era' argument settles nothing. Suppose it was a weak era and Djokovic would have won a similar number of slams during that time.

All that means is that Federer wasn't tested. It tells us nothing about what Federer's level actually was.

In 2004-2007, if prime Nadal and Djokovic played, even with Nose around, the slams would go something like this:

Djokovic: back to back AO+USO from 2004-2007 = 8 slams
Nadal: channel slams from 2004-2007 = 8 slams

Noserer: back to back Basel and Luxembourg from 2004-2007

And please also give me this explanation. old Davydenko > heyday Nadal. Roddick > Djokovic.

My explanation. It is from Roddick's decline that Djokovic began to win Roddick.

Djokovic or Nadal are blessed with the too much slow surface age. If they exist in the quick time of grass or hard court, there are few chances for them to win the victory.

What do you think?

Overrated he may be - he still has the game that I don't think Djoko could touch. He could beat anyone. Fed/Nadal, you name it. Fed really didn't become Fed until he managed to figure out Fat Dave.

And is Murray really better than Hewitt? I don't think so. Dave > Djoko and Hewitt > Murray. The new generation really doesn't have a player like Roddick, either. Not to mention JCF.

Is it a strong generation? Absolutely, no doubt about that. This era with Federer is one of the strongest ever. Even if Rafa does nothing, if Federer manages to last as long as Connors, and Djoko + Murray last as long as McEnroe and Lendl, it could even be the strongest ever. The jury is out.
