Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
I wonder if he will call it 5th slam in rio. it's only because last year's olympics had a wimbledon flavor added to it that made it "more important", noone was calling it 5th slam when rafa was winning beijing, not to mention earlier winners.

The clowns rating WTF above the Olympics became very quiet after the Olympics when it was very obvious how incredibly important the Games are to most players.
To be honest, I think a majority of players these days would pick an Olympic Gold over the AO title.

It's special and unique. It's an individual event that greatly represents the success upon the medalists' country. Winning it is one of the hardest things to do in a Tennis players' career due to the 4 years it takes for the next one, no matter how hard trolls try to belittle it because their favourite flopped and a player they despise was victorious.
I personally preferred Murray winning Olympic Gold over Wimbledon last year. Djokovic and Federer will probably never win it for their country, while Andy still has several opportunities to win Wimbledon now that he has already given his country the greatest victory of all.

Yeah, you win an Olympic medal for your country unlike a slam title that you win mainly for yourself. But that doesn't mean OG are more important for players. And for the country, it's quite the same if a gold medal comes from singles or doubles, it's an Olympic gold anyway. That's why most singles players play also doubles at OG.
Anyway, I think they could just drop tennis from OG and introduce sports like beach volley for which OG is the biggest event and which attract spectators.

Beach volley has been in the olympics for some time now, hasn't it?

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
Yeah, I just took it as an example. Beach volley doesn't have more prestigious evets than OG. Still, it probably gets more spectators than some more traditional Olympic events, for certain reasons. I really don't care that much about beach volley but probably it's good for Olympic business.
So, replace e.g. tennis, golf, cycling, and football with sports like that.

Football and tennis generate a lot of crowd, I don't think they can and will be replaced. Cycling is a highly athletic sport, it's a must in the Olympics. Golf is new (or rather reintroduced after 100 years), they're testing the waters. If it brings $$$$$ it will stay. If not, it's gonna be canned in 4 to 8 years.

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
The OG is the pinnacle of velodrome cycling. I think they should drop the road events though.
Football and tennis are a joke to have in the OG but they bring lots of $$ so they aren't going anywhere. Golf will probably end up being the same.

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
no tournament that has Marc Rosset and Nicolas Massu as champions, can be called a 5th slam
or even be bigger than the WTF champs
end of.
