Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
During tonight's coverage, Jim Courier stated that in his mind the Olympics is the 5th major and the reason why? Because the players certainly treat it that way! He goes on to state that therefore in his opinion Murray was the player of the season 2012. He also says that it's a big reason for Federer to be motivated to make it to the Rio 2016 games.
I'd also rate it as the next important tournament after the 4 majors as well, you can see how much it means to the players and the final is best of 5.

Smart man this Courier, it may not have been before, but right now it's definitely the 5th most important one out there

Not the fifth major.
Definitely one of the blue ribbon tournaments though. Is now up there with Slams, Masters and YEC as the tournaments that all the top players attend and want to win.
Where it fits into that in terms of importance is probably down to individual players.

If there were a 5th major, it'd be WTF on indoor carpet. All players would be motivated to show they can win a major on carpet.

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
There is no such thing as a fifth Major. We can't make one up to support our argument for player of the year.
Majors are Australian, French, Wimbledon and U.S.
Olympics is Olympics.
Courier should say that in his opinion The Olympics is the fifth most important tournament you can win. The most important below the Majors.

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
i disagree, it cant be the 5 major bc not every player can get in, theres a Certain amount of player who can enter from each country and it is not fair.

The Olympics and the Davis Cup are the most prestigious events in tennis. Anyone with two brain cells knows that.

His statement might have something to do with him having been a Davis Cup zealot when he was a player.

If there is a 5th major, then surely there must be 6th, 7th, 8th and so on?

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
What Courier says is law. So I guess it is the 5th slam.
So revising the numbers: nadal - 12 slams and murray - 2 slams. Guess murray has beaten Roger in a slam and nadal is the only active player with the non-calendar Grand Slam. Roger is missing the Olympics.

so you'd rather for Fed to have 7 Davis Cup titles than 7 Wimbledons?

Re: Courier: Olympics = 5th major!
by the same logic that it comes round only once every 4 years, why not put it above the slams?
