But I have to ask, what does that have to do with anything? Safin came back and defeated quality opposition upon returning fully fit from his wrist injury, it's not like he was defeating good but not great players like Ferrer, in slam semi-finals.
From 2001-2003 we saw players win slams that wouldn't do it these days. It's definetely harder now than when Ferrero, Roddick, Johansson, Costa and Ivanišević won their slams.

He has a slam, he is probably the 4th most hyped player in tennis, behind the 3 others who have won slams recently, go figure that!

The only one of those players who get remotely lucky was Johansson. You've just proved that you didn't watch tennis then to witness these men perform during their prime. Though that's no excuse for your ignorance.

And I still don't understand as to why that makes a difference to Safin achieving what he did in between slams.

Nothing definite about it. You have an opinion, not fact. You also know not everyone agrees with you, so don't treat it as a given and avoid phrases such as "definitely", exchange them instead with "in my opinion".

Ferrero well past it, Coria for 2 MS events who was also not at his best, Gaudio well past it, Costa? In 2003 when Costa was winning matches on heart alone? Even Costa lost to a 16 year old Nadal in 2003. Corretja? When, in 2003 when he was old and past it? Moya was also old and past it.

Yes, Federer and Djokovic.

Yes, Federer and Djokovic.
Coria was in his prime in 2005. It wouldn't have mattered even if the rest were in the primes. The fact is that they are Roland Garros champions and made up for a better opposition than all the Rookie chumps Federer played in grandslams until 2007.

Does it matter what competition Nadal had in clay?? He is untouchable there, he would have beat everyone.

His improvements from the Olympics onwards have given him a platform to build on and he looks game for it.

The likely quarter final rematch with Andy should be sensational.

BTW which burro said Ivanisevic won a weak slam? Fast grass, high quality field (Rafter, Agassi, Sampras, Federer, Henman, Roddick, Hewitt, Escude, Schalken, Rusedski, Safin) but yeah that's a shit field.

Still waiting for one of the 'haters' to reply to my question.

I'm not sure if they are blindly hating or just completely out of touch with reality.

I actually think he deserves more hype for what he achieved after his comeback than for winning a Slam; with his talent, he was bound to win a Slam or two at some point anyway, it's his meteoric rise back to the top of men's tennis that really deserves praise. Most players (and sportsmen in general) fade away after major surgeries (ironically including some players who are supported by posters in this thread hating on JMDP) or take an awfully long time to get back to some sort of form, JMDP on the other hand is back to QF/SF of big events on a consistent basis less than two years after going under the knife and only improving his level. If anything, he's underhyped; on most other sports, this would get the coverage and praise it deserves but the inept tennis media is more focused on prining stories about Federer having waffles for breakfast or Djokovic buying some sort of weird cheese.

I'd love the 'haters' to give me a list of players who underwent major surgery and then went on to win a Slam or even just reached the top 10 in the entire rest of their careers, let alone within 2 years.

You obviously didn't watch tennis then, because what I'm trying to say is that they cannot be considered rivals having never faced Nadal at Roland Garros and even when any of these players did face them, they were out of their primes. The only one Nadal faced at Roland Garros was Moya and that was in 2007 when Moya was almost 31 years old.

And no, Coria was struggling with injury as early from January when he was having leg problems, then his serve started to show minor signs of deterioration and it was obvious that his confidence had dropped significantly.

Here's another way to put it, despite Nadal never facing any barring Moya at Roland Garros. Here's the last time Nadal met the following: Coria - 2006 Monte Carlo. Gaudio - 2006 Monte Carlo. Corretja - 2003 before Roland Garros. Moya - 2008 Hamburg. Ferrero - 2010 Monte Carlo. Costa - 2003 Monte Carlo.

So his longest term 'rival' from this group was Ferrero, of whom he faced first 2 years out of Ferrero's prime and last at the age of 23.

Some rivals.
