It took Safin 5 years to win his second slam, so you never know...

Since Del Potro won US Open 2009 Federer won 2 GS but could not win a MS.If Ferrer still can defeat him regularly as it is nothing Del Potro will get to nowhere

No hype from me, just a fan. He's done fantastic since his injury, and for me anything he wins is great.... But funny, a lot of Nole fans forgetting that it was Del Potro who beat Nole for Olympic Bronze on his worst surface after a uber long match with Fed.

Safin reached 2 slam finals, won 3 Masters Series events and a Davis Cup during that period. He had just as many injury woes as Del Potro but following his year of injury in 2003, he came back fitter than ever at the 2004 Australian Open. Instead of improving, Del Potro had deteriorated in terms of physical fitness.

I think the key is regaining the level of phsical fitness he attained in 2009.

Well looking at his draw and how he's been playing so far this AO (and the fact that outside this board there are very few who're talking about him to win) I actually think he's playing his best tennis for a few years, so I don't see why him making the SFs or F would be that big a shock. I'm picking him to make the F, but that's just my ambitious speculation.

Probably when he roasts Nadal 6-2 X 3 again then retires Federer. He already retired Roddick so now Delpo needs to step up his game and start to retire bigger names

But his fitness has honestly been crap and if you can't even dominate the likes of Ferrer you need to improve your work ethic. Delpo might be a bit too lazy to become really big. Bit of a Safin feel to that. All the tools there, it's all about stepping up the effort level and spend all those grueling hours working on fitness and movement.

DelPo is 7th in the world, soon to be 6th. Youngest in the top 10 by over a year and a previous slam winner.

What's there not to hype?

The early noughties was an easier era. Look who won slams back then... This current era is one of the toughest ever. Winning slams since 2004 has been hard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Del Potro wins a slam in 2013 or in 2014.

The better question would be how a thread like this can even come up. I know it's MTF, but it still defies belief, some people are even willing to go as far as to suggest that a major surgery had no effect on JMDP's level of play just to fit their agenda. I'm not sure if they are blindly hating or just completely out of touch with reality.

I actually think he deserves more hype for what he achieved after his comeback than for winning a Slam; with his talent, he was bound to win a Slam or two at some point anyway, it's his meteoric rise back to the top of men's tennis that really deserves praise. Most players (and sportsmen in general) fade away after major surgeries (ironically including some players who are supported by posters in this thread hating on JMDP) or take an awfully long time to get back to some sort of form, JMDP on the other hand is back to QF/SF of big events on a consistent basis less than two years after going under the knife and only improving his level. If anything, he's underhyped; on most other sports, this would get the coverage and praise it deserves but the inept tennis media is more focused on prining stories about Federer having waffles for breakfast or Djokovic buying some sort of weird cheese.

I'd love the 'haters' to give me a list of players who underwent major surgery and then went on to win a Slam or even just reached the top 10 in the entire rest of their careers, let alone within 2 years.

I completely disagree. The depth is weaker and the surfaces are far, far less diverse.

But I have to ask, what does that have to do with anything? Safin came back and defeated quality opposition upon returning fully fit from his wrist injury, it's not like he was defeating good but not great players like Ferrer, in slam semi-finals.

I think retiring Federer is a no-go. I think a more adequate and ambitious target for him would be to retire RN at this or next year's RG . If it's in the final, even better.
