Default DILEMMA: Is Andy Murray a transitional slam champion?

We all remember Lleyton Hewitt taking apart a declining Sampras towards the end of their careers, and now we've all realised that he was just a transitional champion.

Present day, we have Roger Federer well past his prime. His timing and movement to his forehand have declined 10 fold from his peak. Rafael Nadal seems to be preparing for what might be his last tilt at grand slam glory. His tendonitis has caught up with him and his slam winning career is as good as over. All of a sudden Andy Murray, an 'okay' player in terms of slam winners, has broken through for a gold medal, and maiden slam and potentially a second slam come tomorrow.

Is Andy Murray a transitional slam champion unfolding before our eyes.

Mandy is not even that. He is just benefiting from out of form players, lucky draws, weather conditions and taking up voodoo classes in order to hex his opponents every match he's losing (Cilic, USO 2012 )

Depends on whether another Roger Federer comes a long. Hewitt, Safin, Roddick, Ferrero etc. didn't look like transitional champions before that.

Btw, one feature distinguishing Murray from Hewitt is that he's already 25. Fairly old for a maiden slam winner.

How the fuck is that possible when the "dominant" player of his generation has already been established? Let alone the fact that he beat said player in the finals.

And no, I'm not talking about Roger.

There's trolling and then there's stupid.

What is a transitional Slam champion? The concept makes no sense at all.

Anyway, unlike Hewitt, Murray is lucky enough that there's not a young Roger Federer about to emerge and beat him up everywhere so he will have great chances to win more. His competition isn't exactly weak, but obviously can't compare with a Peak Federer, who was miles above the field (bar Nadal on clay) to put it mildly.

Hewitt was a transitional world number 1. He wasn't a transitional grand slam champion. A prime Hewitt would be up there with the current big 4 on faster surfaces.

Once players stop winning, how good they were at their best quickly fades from memory. Read some of the threads here from when Hewitt was number one - there was a period where it was inconceivable that anyone could beat him over five sets on a quick surface unless he had a really bad match.

I suspect the same will happen with Murray. He will win slams, but 10 years from now when people look back they will just note how inferior his record is compared to a couple of other players. They won't actually remember how lethal he was at his best.

Was Lendl a transitional champ? He couldn't win slams until McEnroe was past his prime, Connors was old, and Borg was retired. Perhaps you could make the same case for Murray gaining from OldFed, retired KneeDal, and Djokovic past his peak. Lendl basically physically outlasted his competition and though I like Edberg, Becker, and Wilander they were a far cry from the all time greats before them.

Not to say Mugray will have a career anywhere near Lendl, but maybe he'll win a few more slams if he get to play competiton like Mecir and Perfnors in slam finals

Until Bnard gets to number 1 every player since the inception of the sport has been a transitional gimp of some sort.

Faking mental illness shouldn't be tough. Smile, act natural.

I mean, this is definitely Djokovic's mini-era. Murray isn't so much a transitional champ as someone who got a Slam in when another man had control of the game.
