Nice match from Gilles eventually, but still worrying amount of unforced errors (in the 1st set anyway.) He's wasting energy on these matches that should be much simpler wins.

The TB is pathetic, wasted an hour to lose a set. But afterward is great, very clean hitting. A little concern for his right arm trouble, hopefully the problem will go away for the next round.

Better stuff today from Gilles. Typical 1st set struggle to find his groove and figure out his opponent and get his teeth in the match, but once he did, it was pretty much smooth sailing from there on out.

Querrey is next, he worries me because of the big serve. Gilles is going to have to hold more often than he has been doing this year.

I'm also worried about Querrey, bcoz of Gilles bad H2H vs big servers, but if he plays like in sets 2,3 & 4 of today he should be fine. Forgot to say, it was Gilles 100th tour level clay win and his 10th win at RG main draw.

I feel you guys. I'm most worried about Gilles' 1st and 2nd serve and how it will hold up to the constant pressure of Querrey's typical American power style. One thing the American players love to do is be aggressive to the max and eat any short ball or weak serve for lunch. I'm really hoping that Gilles won't let Querrey muscle him around and exploit his serve, but of course if that's what I'm worried about, you can bet his coach has told him to do the very same thing. I think because it is on clay though, that works a bit in Gilles' favor. Allez Gilou!

Agreed. He needs to be ultra-agressive from the first point and definitely make sure he gets ahead in the first set. He's been slow at getting going these recent matches, but I'm confident he can get the win if he plays with confidence. Fingers crossed he tries to keep the rallies short and gets through without too much drama

In the paper...

He plays again on Court 2 tomorrow in third match, he might like to play on this court because of the proximity with the crowd but i feel these quicker courts (particularly the court 1) give an advantage to good servers like Querrey etc...
I think that playing on Lenglen would be better for him.

Since he loves Court 2, I've no argument with that. And I think the really slow clay court really doesn't suit him that well, I think he needs some pace from the court to help his shots to be more effective. He lost to Querrey on clay before but won his 2 matches on HC against Sam. He was awful on clay in 2009, just plain awful. But anyway, as usual, not sure what to expect from Gilles, he can be awesome or he can be shit, who knows anymore. The only thing that I can be sure is that you can't guess his next performance by basing it on his last match. Allez Gilles.

So far, no good. He lost the first set in no time. Didn't play too bad but it seems Querrey's overpowering him and ate up any short ball. Oh well. I must admit seeing Querrey's record in RG 1 win in 6 years, I really thought Gilles had a good draw . Maybe not.
C'mon Gilles.

Horrible 3rd set from Simon. He was playing so much better in the 2nd set and had all the momentum going into the 3rd with Querrey under all sorts of pressure and then he just proceeded out of nowhere to make a slew of UE's and DF's and totally gifted Querrey this 3rd set. He better get his you know what together for the 4th set or he's outta here. C'mon now Gilles!

Gilles is probably going to rue that cheap regulation backhand error he made at 2-2 15-40. He should be up a break right now.
