He's doing much better than last year. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but I think he has about 300 points more than last year at this point. That's the difference between being 11th in the race and 22nd in the race. The semis at Rotterdam and R16 at the Aussie have really helped.

There's this article in the paper from last week, before he left for BA:

Well, our suspicions were right, Gilles will be playing singles. Now that he's playing, I hope he tries his best. The last thing we need is the media jumping all over him for another loss in Davis Cup

And he plays Monaco, whose only two wins of the year have come on DC, and who beated Gilles 64 60 in Paris 2011. I think the hostile crowd won't bother much Gilles, he played great vs Rafa in Madrid and didn't seem very scared of DC crowd vs Serbia, he just played shit.

Well, if they lose, it will be all his fault of course. Remember last year, even Tsonga's loss to Isner was Gilles' fault .

Last nite I read L'Equipe and they had 3 scenarios with Gilles, Benny or Ritchies out and they said the most likely is Gilles not included. So disappointing that L'Equipe was wrong. Oh well, it's not that we haven't prepared for this. I hope he wins and have a good time, and if he doesn't, as long as this doesn't affect his season, that's good enough for me.

We're all so very protective of our Simon. But if i'm being honest though, I'm kinda excited for Simon. There's not going to be many more opportunities for him to play DC and it's always an opportunity for him to redeem himself (in their eyes not ours). Both opponents Argentina has are winnable matches for Gilles so let's all just hope for the best and cheer our boy on.

That's only half of what I feel, the other half is my grudge against TPTB. It's always someone is injured so they need him. They only need him when they don't have a choice, he's always the last resort. And because I know Gilles loves to be part of DC, it's more maddening that the feeling is not reciprocal.

I know, but he was part of the official team selection to begin with before Gasquet even pulled out and you have to admit that of the singles players inside the top 15 on the team, Tsonga and Gasquet were currently in the best form so it makes sense to want to go with who you perceive to be your strongest and most in form players at the time if you're Clement.

We both share a deep-seeded resentment towards Forget and how he treated Simon during his tenure as DC captain and especially for robbing him of what would've been most likely, given the H2H against Troicki who hadn't even taken so much as a set off of Simon in their six previous meetings, a defining DC moment for him.

But I think we need to give Clement the benefit of the doubt and see if he will be better about it than Forget was. Forget made it a boys club with Tsonga, Monfils, Benny and Llodra with Gilles kinda ostracized from them. Clement so far seems to really base it on performance. From what I have seen, he has been to most of Gilles' matches watching very closely and cheering him on and studying his performance. We'll see how things go. Rest assured Gilles performance this weekend will go a long way in establishing the relationship going forward. I wish him nothing but luck and good fortune in coming out on top.

I'm not talking about this tie. I'm talking about what happened the past few years. I'm afraid the damage is done (if not to Gilles, then it is to me - I have no more illusion for it). Once I lost faith in something, the faith will not be easily restored. So pardon me for not ever wanting Gilles to be part of it, even though I know he wants it badly regardless (and good that it just seem DC always happens against my wishes anyway, so that will suit Gilles better). It's not Clement's fault of course. I have nothing but respect for Arnaud. I of course wish him nothing but success.

I think it's sort of a generational thing with Gilles. The guys around his age like Monfils and Tsonga love him and respect his game whereas the older Frenchies haven't really given him too much respect. That being said, since he's become captain Clement has seemed to go out of his way to watch Gilles when he can and has said very complimentary things about Gilles so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm more concerned about the press and what they'll do to his confidence if he loses. I think that Czech Republic match messed him up for a lot longer than he will admit.

And yes, I will never get over that Serbia decision. It would have been the defining moment of his career and they put in Llodra on a slow hardcourt. It was inexcusable that he was picked likely because Forget was better friends with him.

Why would Clement doesn't respect Gilles?
"Only" Grosjean, PHM in 2008 (but they travel a lot together right now apparently) and Benneteau have said negative things about Gilles.
Also, i don't think Forget disliked him either, he said complimentary thinks about Gilles in 2008 (for example when he commented for French TV his match against Fed at Masters Cup 2008, he was enthusiastic about Gilles's performance whereas he's such a Fed fan).
Apparently, he picked Llodra over Gilles to play against Troicki because he was in form after his Bercy perfomance and took into consideration that Gilles was out of form, he's good friends with Llodra and like his game too.

I don't think Mike said anything that has remotely suggested that Clement doesn't respect Gilles.

And Forget enthusiastic about Gilles in 2008 really means nothing when it came to 2010. If I remembered correctly, I think Forget called Gilles a genius after Gilles won against Berdych in AO 2006. http://www.menstennisforums.com/show...70&postcount=1 But that doesn't change the fact that he has also criticized Gilles' playing style during DC in the past 2 years.

I think Forget picked Llodra because he has no confidence in Gilles and wouldn't want to give him the benefit of a doubt, even having the slow court, and that super favorable H2H against Troicki (and he was 1-0 against Tipsy, so theoretically still more favorable than Mika's H2H of 0-1 to Tipsy), and that Llodra is his good friend. The double match the day before, Mika wasn't good at all as I remembered, it was Arnaud who saved the day in that double match. Although, ppl just kept criticizing Gilles for not making a match out of Nole, hence he was in bad form, though they ignored the fact that Gael won even less games than Gilles against Nole 2 days later. Somehow, only Gilles was the one in bad form, everyone's lost was due to the strong opponents. And it's a stretch to use the Paris form as a measurement when they can see Mika wasn't good the day before. Granted, if Mika had won, it would have been the most logical brilliant decision. And I will probably agree. But since Mika lost it so badly against a headcase like Troicki, it just made it even more so infuriating .

I suppose one can also argue that why should Forget has any confidence in Gilles when Gilles didn't win any match in DC before that, while Mika has won many. I suppose that is a fair question. So in a way, I think Forget paid a price for putting his judgement on the wrong factor that day in deciding who should play Troicki. I mean, there is the H2H, there is the slow court, there is a not so convincing single match against Nole and there is a equally unconvincing match in the double. And there's the DC W/L factor. 1. H2H favors Gilles. 2. Slow court doesn't suit Mika. 3 Previous match unconvincing for both Gilles and Mika. 4. previous DC record favors Mika. At the end of the day, the captain is responsible for the result, and his team lost, the only conclusion is that he made a wrong call. I think that is quite fair to say.

And I'm so ready to let bygone be bygone, but every DC tie brings back this grievance inevitably, it's like a recurring bad dream. That's another reason why I don't want Gilles in DC, it's an entirely selfish reason in my part, of course, to not wanting the bad past be brought up again.

On L'Equipe before the first DC match. Gilles sounded very upbeat, a new page for him with a new captain, it seems. I'm beginning to understand why he's on the cover. Made me feel bad for being such a downer . I should join GillesAddict to be excited for him.

If this is a regular tour match, I probably won't be worry for him against Monaco, given both players current form. But Monaco's only 2 wins this year were both in Argentine during DC, it means no matter how sucks he is atm, he's still manage to up his level in DC. As for Gilles, this being DC, eventhough he said he doesn't feel cursed...I still worry.
Allez Gillou!
