I'm the opposite, I found this much easier to watch. The points were over faster, whereas when he gets into those long grinding rallies, I just get more and more nervous with each shot. Several times I've had to stop watching after the first set and only follow the live score because I'm too much of a nervous wreck.

Not playing well today, isn't he? It's like he can't handle Jo's power, plus he's a nervous wreck, missing so many balls for really no reason.

C'mon Gilles.

Yeah, it's back to the current normal level of Gilles today unfortunately. I knew that yesterday was a rarity anymore and pretty much lightning in a bottle. That's why I was reveling in it and enjoying it so much. He needs to find a way to start getting to that level more frequently again though instead of just once in a great while because that's the type of level it's going to take to beat the big guys in the latter stages of 500/1000 tier tournaments and win them. We all know that Gilles can get through the lower ranked players (usually) even operating at less than 60/50%, but not against the Tsongas, (Berdychs when he's playing well like today against Tursonov) Federers etc.

It'd be fine if he played his way into the tournaments against the first few rounds playing somewhat lower level but then turned it up as he faced the big guns like he did against Delpo, but unfortunately, his performance yesterday seems to be the exception rather than the norm and something he can't sustain.

This is about the worst I've ever seen Gilles play. I think it's partially nerves but really disappointing.

This was hard to watch after yesterday because you see what he's capable of but then you have to sit and watch something like this. A pretty tough thing to swallow no? You just never know anymore what you're going to get with him unfortunately. It can be sheer brilliance like yesterday, or utter crap like today.

Well, he sucks big time today, and totally gave up at the end . Oh well. I'll be nice to him. He played 3 good matches this week, it's more good match than his last 4 tournaments combined. Hopefully he can build some momentum from this point on. Take a good rest and come back strong for the US hardcourts. Allez.

Thank you for the welcomes, mike s and lalaland

He didn't seem to have much fight in him today, didn't even really get angry. Hopefully he'll be able to play more like he did against Delpo come the US hardcourts... and avoid his fellow Frenchmen in the draw.

Duong said Gilles has a muscular problem at his bottom , I'm sorry, this really sounds funny.

He moved very badly today, but I didn't think much of it bcos he sucked pretty much in all other areas too, but maybe that's the reason. But frankly, i rather he just lost due to lack of game/energy/motivation/clue/slice... than yet another physical issue. I feel more helpless thinking that he can never be consistently healthy than that he can never be consistent.

Presser transcript, from WLT:

http://www.welovetennis.fr/open-13/6...onga-va-gagner

As usual, a very lucid itw. Makes it easier for me to take all his ups and downs, knowing he's working hard at fixing his problem. But I hope his prediction for tomorrow is wrong, I like Berydie 100 times more than Jo, so I'm cheering for Tomas.

BTW, hope you guys are not demoralized by this one loss. Surely it was bad to the proportion of disaster. I don't think it means he's back to square one. All the work in the past 2 weeks to build up to his win against DP, is not nothing. Today's performance was nothing like the previous few tournaments when he's struggling to play with any sort of conviction. I see today he's exceptionally bad as an anomaly, just like yesterday's match another one which he was exceptionally good. He'll play a lot of matches falling in between these 2 standards, which is just fine. The good thing is for him to know how good he can be and so he can feel confident when he faces the top guys next time.

I agree there was some progress this week so it's not worth getting too disappointed but I'm frustrated because Berdych basically admitted he didn't want to play Gilles because it's a bad matchup so he would have had a really good shot at a title here if he had gotten past Tsonga.
