Well De Witt is definitely mistaken if he thinks that he can beef up Gilles. Gilles is never going to be muscular. Only toned and taut. Gilles isn't just blowing smoke when he says he's tried many times before and his body just doesn't build muscle or beef up. It's just not in his genetics. However, improved cardiovascular and overall fitness isn't a bad thing to strive for. I'm glad to see De Witt with such big ambitions, plans and hopes for Gilles. I'm sure he realizes there is a much bigger star and upside in him than Jarkko even though Jarkoo is a nice guy. But he's nowhere near as talented as Gilles is. We'll see, but I still think the biggest problem that needs working on with Gilles now is his psyche, not his physique.
So no baby news yet?
Just hope the baby is not late this time. The sooner he comes, the more chance that Gilles will get back to tournament sooner than planned. I must admit, without Gilles playing this USO, I find it a little hard to get myself engaged, the 2nd week cannot come sooner.
I agree that it's hard to stay as interested in the tournament as usual. It's also frustrating that a lot of the players ranked around him like Almagro, Nishikori, Janowicz lost early so he had a real chance to make a move in the rankings if he did well here. Oh well, hopefully everything works out and he comes back more fit and healthy.
Tennis is in a bit of a slump, would take some time to recover i reckon.
And addict, you are mistaken, everyone can beef up to some extent, I've been slim my whole life and managed when tried really hard to gain almost 10 kg. Maintenance is much easier. And it changed my tennis a lot. Just imagining what an extra 5-10 kg would do to Gilles. Much more power and durability for sure and that would ease his mind as well. He really has to dedicate himself for it. I think his passion for tennis is immense but too much emphasis on just hitting the ball will carry you thus far.
I don't know Gilloulou. Gilles has been pretty adamant about the fact that he can't put on any more muscle or weight, almost to the point of getting snippy and angry with the people (like the press) who have asked him about it often in the past. He says repeatedly that he has tried many times before and that it's no secret to him that if he had more muscle it would make things much easier for him than they are but it just doesn't happen and so it frustrates him when people ask him like it's something he's never thought of trying to do before.
Here's just one of many videos where the question of weight training, or bodybuilding in this case, is posed to him and you can see that Gilles has been there done that with no results and he talks in the video about how he has always been small since he was a kid, which I know isn't news to any of us, but it serves to reinforce the point. They don't call him poussin for nothing.
I think Gilles is just one of those people that is always going to be a skinny string bean who will only be toned and have what muscle he does have as big as it can be. You can tell by his ankles that he's never had and never will have a big frame that supports more weight of any kind. It would be cool if De Witt was able to find something that would put even a small amount of muscle mass on Gilles, but barring anything illegal, I don't see anything really having much affect. I'd love to be wrong, but I believe Gilles from his own words about it. I think he knows his body and what is and isn't capable of doing.
It would be amazing if he came back next season completely beefed up and playing the best tennis of his life. Haha. Unlikely. But as long as he's healthy and still enjoys being on the tour, I'll be happy.
