Medieval history has always been my favorite. But now in my latter years I have done more reading in u.s.history. As a student I never liked the civil war or anything after 1815. I did have a morbid fascination with the holocaust so I read every thing available there. Now I will read nearly anything I can find about anything. Books about wwII and the civil war are more plentiful. There are some great biographies on Catherine and Peter the great out now. I liked the Catherine one best.

Reading Chinese history only taught me one thing and not a good one. For a country to be prosperous under a ruler, the ruler needs to be ruthless. Tang dynasty, regarded as the high point in Chinese civilization, was brought on by an emperor who killed his brothers in order to ascend to the throne. And he was viewed as one of the best rulers in Chinese history.

it's over. I liked it but I am 100% sure I would have loved it a lot more if I understood all the details, all the references.

Agreed. Yet I must say that the dialogue, the very real way in which human emotion was portrayed in this film is what I liked most about it. I think I might rewatch once I´ve read up on the historical background of this period.

Tsarist Russia, can´t go wrong with that My own tastes are rather similar to yours I must say, minus the penchant for US history. Did your fascination for the holocaust simply fizzle out because you were over-satiated with books on the subject or were there other reasons?

Good film, but it kind of frustrated me a little bit.

Due to the aforementioned lack of black people in it?
And yes, good film if you like your movies a bit slower and dialogue-heavy.

Well It depends on my mood. Sometimes I love films that are dialogue heavy, but other times I hate them. I guess I'll check it out.

No. That would be a rather trivial thing to base a judgement of a film upon.
I just feel that they didn't explore all the areas of Lincoln's personality. For instance, there was hardly anything with regards to the strong evidence that he was a racist. I believe, and understand why, this film was made to cater for twenty-first century Americans, and how they want to view Lincoln. I believe it isn't accurate, or at least displaying the full picture.
It's an interesting and thought provoking piece of cinema, nonetheless.

From an outsiders´ position, I dare say you are right. More specifically, it seems that the US is perhaps even more divided than in those days (hyperbole, but still). Lincoln is one of the few people that is unanimously loved and appreciated. A hagiographical account that glosses over his most negative sides is to be expected then in such a period(although I did find quite a bit of nuance in the portrayal of Lincoln by Daniel Day-Lewis. Then again, DDL is a great actor, so that´s not surprising).

DDL is fantastic, indeed.
I've read back my posts and I'm pretty negative. It's easy to see I'm in a terrible mood.
