I think I read he wanted to prepare better for the Davis Cup. Is that right?
Edit: Thx for the answer.

That's true, and kinda weird in my opinion.

well not really. Think about it his way. He knows he hasnt got a shot in hell of winning the australian open but if he and del potro can stay healthy all year then argentina does have a very realistic shot at winning the davis cup and it does mean alot to him so it makes sense that he'd prepare for it.

The thought of playing 5 sets in the first round was making Dave nauseous.

I guess Nalbandian is going to retire next year. He just seems to try a last shot in Davis Cup.

Re: Australian Open 2013 withdrawals (Fish, Nalbandian OUT)
Nalbandian's girlfriend his pregnant and probably the two main reasons why he quitted are to spend more time with his girl and prepared for the Davis Cup too. I don't see David playing tennis for a long time (mentioned that he might be retiring after Miami MS according to what happens in Davis Cup)

He's going to play all of the next season. That bit about possibly retiring after Miami was obviously a misunderstanding.
What he actually said was that he has his schedule planned until Miami, the rest he still has to see about.
(Which is also going to be matter of ranking and wildcards.)
It's all about not wanting to switch surfaces. If the DC tie was played on hardcourt (which Jaite and the AAT offered for the sake of getting Delpo to play) he would've done his pre-season on hardcourt and played the Australian Open.
Now that this won't be the case, he'll do his pre-season on clay.
Davis Cup is the #1 priority for Nalbandian. That's nothing new and neither is him, skipping a Slam for the sake of it.

Probably at the end of next year. Though he still refuses to make a clear statement about it.

yes that's what he had clearly said in the interviews you had translated : it depended on the surface of the tie against Germany (then I guess it has been decided to clay ?)
He will play several tournaments in the SouthAmerican swing.
Besides, as he comes back from injury and if his girlfriend is pregnant, that adds some more context to that decision ...
And yes, he said that he will play all of next year but he seemed to imply that he migt retire in the end of next year.

Re: Australian Open 2013 withdrawals (Fish, Nalbandian OUT)
"Even though he will skip the Australian Open, Mardy Fish is currently practicing at the USTA West Coast Training Center in Carson, California, his agent, John Tobias, told TENNIS.com.
Fish is planning return to the ATP tour in February at the SAP Open in San Jose, California. The 30-year-old American has been struggling with heart problems since the early spring and has not competed since the first week of the U.S. Open." (tennis.com)
So at least, Mardy is practising now.
