What was the impetus for you to learn French to such a degree?

Been to France many times, especially as a kid, and always liked the language. Besides, unlike English, French is actually quite nicely taught in the Portuguese educational system, it's far from perfect but gives you pretty good bases to build on.

Or, Roger loses even before QF? lol

Arse Clown Contest, it's an off season MTF contestant to decide who was the biggest clown of the year on MTF. There's a nominations thread, which determines the seedings, then a tennis-style draw, with 12-hour voting periods for each round. The ironic part about this contest is that its organizer is actually the biggest clown on the forum

The setup/format is far from perfect, but it's still a cool off season contest all in all. You don't even 'need' to know about it, but if you want to just check Non-Tennis after the World Tour Finals I guess.

Ferrer, Boredo, Simon, Monaco and Ramos on a consistent basis are the ones that come to mind. Then there are players who are generally not among the most boring, but can be in specific matchups.

so mostly defensive players! a lot of spanish players too! do you find any offensive player(s) boring?

also, who's the worst player you support (as far as tennis skills go)?

Yup, mostly pushers, although nationality has nothing to do with it. Offensive players can often be very frustrating but, at least to me, not boring. I always respect players who really go for their shots and try to take matters into their own hands.

As for the worst player I support (not just like but actively follow and support), excluding my Portuguese countrymen slugging it out on the Challenger circuit, at the moment it's probably Monfils although I hope he can make his way back to the top 10 and change that.

Del Potro is playing against Maria Sharapova in a slam final. Sharapova starts off with 6-0 6-0 5-0 40-00 and has an easy overhead putaway, who wins the match?

50-50 from that point. Being 40-0 down, there are basically three points where a simple UE/double fault is enough to lose the match. Easy overhead putaways are not easy when it's a WTA mug like Sharapova on the end of them so no guarantee she'd put it away at all.

It basically comes down to this: if Sharapova makes that smash or Del Potro gives her a cheap UE in the next two points, she wins. If Del Potro gets out of that game, he wins: Sharapova would have a 0,5% chance if JMDP made it 5-1, that chance would basically consist of serving completely out of her mind and being insanely clutch in one of her remaining service games in the third set. The final being at Wimbledon would maybe increase her chances to like 5% as the serve is far more effective than on other surfaces.

What does Delpo need to be more focused and bring his A-game in every match?

I know Chardy played his mind off that match, but Delpo outplayed him in the 3rd set, and IMO, he played waaaaay better the first 2 rounds... So... What does he need to find that level and keep it up?

Unlike the other active Slam winners (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray), Del Potro is very human. What I mean by this is that at times it looks like the top 4 are tennis machines: Federer has played at a consistently incredible standard for like a decade (hasn't missed a Slam QF since 2004), the rest of the current top 4 always seem like they can run forever and they can play a 5 hour+ match one day and play the next match almost as if nothing had happened.

Del Potro in comparison is very human; he's very fragile and gets injured constantly, he gets tired/has stamina issues, he is affected by conditions (like the extreme Australian heat). What happened in Australia was he looked lethargic/drained of energy that day (imo probably because of the extreme heat, which he usually struggles with) and faced a guy playing some really great tennis who pounced on it. It has actually happened more times early in Slams, only it went under the radar because his opponent wasn't strong enough to make it count. If he had to lose early, it's good it was in Australia, which is not a good Slam for him traditionally - he tends to struggle under the hot conditions.

This is something he can't solve, his body just isn't built for consistent top level tennis in this era, accepting his struggles is part of being a Del Potro fan. He'll never be able to play his 'A' game all year long. What he should do is schedule smartly and try his best to be healthy and in the best form possible for Grand Slam events, to give himself the best possible chance to win another Slam at some point, that should be his priority. Given how prone to injuries he is, he must prioritize peaking for the big events: as long as he's in the top 8 his ranking doesn't really matter much (and he can be top 8 even with a reduced schedule). His next target should be to be healthy and in form for Roland Garros; he likes the conditions there and has a good shot against anyone on the surface so that should be his aim. If he can get prolonged spells of good health at some point, then the aims can change, but for now I believe giving big events absolute priority is the wisest choice: he definitely doesn't want to go the way of other injury prone players who burnt out too soon because they tried to play far more than their bodies could hold up.

What do you think about the 1-1 at Madrid in Copa del Rey?? Do you think it's a good result despite the match could've ended 2-0 (Cesc and Pedro missed clear opportunities to score when the match 1-0)? What kind of match do you excpect for the second leg?

Yeah, I think it's a good result, an away draw with goals always is in these situations. That said, it could have easily been much better had Pedro put that sitter away but oh well. I expect another tight affair in the second leg and I expect Real to score, so Barca will need to score as well to advance.

It should follow the same pattern as other Clásicos, with Barca controlling possession but Real quite dangerous on fast transitions. Should be a cracker.
