Re: Poll: World Tour Finals - Doubles
16 players. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a regular partner.
Also if it were done by teams it is possible that a player could qualify with 2 different partners.

Also sometimes partners get banned One of my partners got banned once and caused ridiculous drama that caused me to miss playing the French Open. That was penalty enough for me playing with a partner who was prone to being banned. I would have hated to have been penalized from the WTF because my partner got banned after I had played with him half the year and then had to make adjustments and play with other people for the duration of his ban
If his ban hadn't been during May, but instead in October, that wouldn't have been fair to me to miss just because I was stuck with him as a team You can say "that's the risk you take playing with someone" but it's hard to find a permanent partner and you can't always predict who will be banned or the mods decisions

Re: Poll: World Tour Finals - Doubles
How is this a serious question, players obviously.
So a player playing with different players throughout the year finishes the year in the top 16, but misses out on the WTF just because he didn't have a regular partner? That would be very unfair.

Re: Poll: World Tour Finals - Doubles
I was thinking of another scenario
If I win a slam with let's say Bibberz and another slam later in the year with lets say... Deathless Mortal (picked as a random example), I could qualify to the WTF with both partners and have to choose between them so that one of THEM didn't get to play?
I don't like that possibility at all I think it's much more likely for this to happen in TT than in the "real world"

On the other side of the coin - I played with the same partner all year through. He got a ban for two weeks (wasnt two weeks but it covered two event weeks) - during those two weeks I played with one off partners, in one of the events I lost 1R and the other I made a Challenger SF. Because of that ban my partner lost out in a place at the WTF - were it teams he would have made it.

Re: Poll: World Tour Finals - Doubles
I like the team concept a lot more - rewards those (unfairly/fairly) who stick with the same partner. Personally would be weird to play all year with a partner and then in the event that person didn't qualify have to play with a stranger for the finals.
On the other hand my concern would be extra work this might cause whoever is doing the rankings.

It was an honour for me to get to play with Murilo for the first time and help him to his first WTF match win in years - I did feel a bit like I was cheating on Bruno

Re: Poll: World Tour Finals - Doubles
I think it's interesting that people with regular doubles partners who are voting for it to remain an individual race though Or even if they don't have permanent partners now, they have in the past and still think it's okay.
It's hard to find someone whose style works with you to play doubles with. Some people play too safe, some too risky, some like to discuss picks, some like to just send separately, some like to be bossy and just tell their partner what to do, some who think doubles doesn't matter, some who would sacrifice their singles results for doubles if needed, etc. I think I have played with all these types of people By the time you find someone after playing the field long enough half the season could be gone.
If it sounds like TT partnership like a relationship, I believe it is And making WTF just for permanent pairs is like having a dinner party only for married couples and leaving all your single friends out just because they haven't had the luck to fall in love yet More people in this game are single than have pairs, and I always try to make my TT decisions for what will negatively affect as few people as possible.
Anyway this vote is close, so everyone who thinks it should be a team race, just remember that your partner can dump you at any moment for someone younger and prettier than you (kidding! sort of!) No one wants to be stuck in a loveless marriage "for the kids" for the WTF
