So much for GB's consecutive David Cup titles in the next few years

I remember first seeing Goodall in action at Queen's in 2005 against Rusedski. He started out on tour with a two handed forehand, but then switched that to a one hander at the beginning of 2006. He did well to qualify for both Wimbledon and the US Open that year.

At Wimbledon in 2009 he served very well against Llodra and pushed him to 5 sets.

Players from the UK have it much easier than those from most other countries, benefiting from the filthy rich LTA, their country hosting a grand slam (which ploughs a lot more money in the sport and player funding) and coming from Western Europe where there are so many junior, futures and challenger events in a relatively small geographical area.

If Goodall is struggling financially then imagine what the situation is like for those lower ranked players on the challenger or futures circuits week in week out, that come from countries without such lavish resources.

The ever increasing costs of starting and maintaining a pro career, and the fact that so much money within the sport finds its way into the hands of so few players, means that many players will be forced to retire early, and many others will choose not to turn pro in the first place.

Makes you wonder what it'd take Andy to just give the guy £10-20k. It's basically pocket money to Andy and would be giving something back to the game in Britain, even if Goodall is never going to challenge the top 100.

If you cant pass to the next level, the challenger tour, which is the least a very good player could do, you are not tailored for professional tennis.

I mean, you can be a very very good tennis player like Goodall, Smethurst, Middelkoop, Arnaboldi or lets say, Capkovic, but if you are forever inside the 250-400 positions of the ranking, its obviously necessary to retire after you are 23 or 24 years old.

Its obvious ATPTOUR isnt increasing tennis prize moneys. ATP only allows that the first 200 players in the world get some money while playing tennis. If you are out of the top 200 and cant win more than 10 challenger matches in the year, you obviously cant play tennis professionaly.

Tennis is a sport for a few. On the other hand you can be a mediocre left back for a russian football team and earn more in a month than the 200th tennis player in the world in aplayer.

Go play football, Goodall.
Yay , shout out for smethie !

Why should Andy just give someone £10-20k? I have got nothing against Josh (although he has an annoying tendency to moan about things) but he still spends most of his time playing on the futures tour and I don't think someone should be able to make a good living by doing so.

Murray is planning to invest in a new tennis academy in Scotland...will 'give back' far more to British tennis than keeping Goodall on the Futures tour for another year or two.

Goodall has the uncanny ability off the forehand side to actually hit the floor of the court before it hits the net.
